Hi family and friends,
This Lunar New Year, Iâve decided to celebrate by giving to a few of the charities I care most about. These organizations are impacting the Asian community locally, nationally, and globally, and I hope you will consider joining me to support them in the Year of the Dragon!
How a society treats its elderly is a reflection of the values of that society. Self-Help for the Elderly was founded in 1966 in SF Chinatown and has now expanded across the Bay Area to provide an array of services to senior citizens, 90% of whom are low-income and from minority communities. My late mother, Eppie Lam, helped launch the Santa Clara chapter in the 1990s and her legacy lives on through this amazing organization.
Now more than ever, itâs critical for Asian-Americans to stake our claim as a vital part of American society. The Museum of Chinese in America is a national charity dedicated to celebrating and preserving the Chinese-American experience through its museum in New Yorkâs Chinatown and educational programs across the country. MoCA recently honored my father, Dr. David K. Lam, with their Legacy Award, and we have greatly enjoyed supporting this worthwhile organization.
As a professional investor in the U.S., Iâve witnessed a significant under-representation of Asian-Americans in the investment management industry. For nearly a decade, I have served on the board of the Association of Asian-American Investment Managers, a non-profit that advocates open and fair access for Asian-Americans to capital and employment opportunities. Iâm delighted to support this organization, with all proceeds from the AAAIM fundraiser allocated to AAAIM Accelerate, which funds scholarships for underprivileged students.
AAAIMâs National Charity Partner is St. Jude Childrenâs Research Hospital, which is a leading US pediatric cancer institute and also one of the most impactful U.S. healthcare charities in Asia. St. Jude has been working in China since 1991, and among its many accomplishments established the first national cancer registry in China, launched several clinical trials in China related to Leukemia, and co-founded the first National Childrenâs Hospital thatâs slated to open this year in Shanghai. St. Jude has also worked throughout the APAC region including collaborations with 35 institutions in 11 countries including Singapore, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Cambodia. As a parent of four, St. Judeâs mission to eradicate childhood cancer resonates with me and I hope youâll join me to support this great cause.
