We couldn't help but be moved after reading the heartbreaking story of Marcellus Williams, an innocent man put to death yesterday by the state of Missouri for a crime he didn't commit.

He was a black man who had been accused and convinced of killing a white woman. He never confessed. In fact, his conviction was based on two unreliable eyewitnesses who received both money and a shorter sentence for their own crimes by testifying against him. DNA evidence that could have exonerated him was mishandled by police and the prosecutor's office agrees that mistakes were made and that his conviction should be overturned. Now he is dead.

Imagine if he was your friend, parent, child, or loved one. Imagine if they were falsely accused, imprisoned for 24 years, and killed like Marcellus Williams. You think it can't happen to them and certainly not in the United States but it does happen. In 2023 alone, almost 200 people who had been convicted of crimes they didn't commit were exonerated. There are likely many more who lack the support to properly challenge their convictions and win back their freedom.

The Innocence Project and the Equal Justice Initiative are two organizations who work tirelessly every day to fight for those who were unjustly accused and imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit. These organizations believe in working to improve our justice system so that everyone can get a fair trial and nobody has to go through what Marcellus Williams and so many others have had to go through.
