For me, Daniel, I’ve dedicated my life to science, both research and education, and am concerned that the general public doesn't fully appreciate the benefits of supporting science. Science is by the people, of the people and for the people. Scientific research generates enormous public good, in terms of technology, quality of life, and satisfying our limitless curiosity. That’s why for this fundraiser, I’ve selected Society for Science & the Public, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Project Scientist because they work specifically to help the general public understand the role of science and scientists and how science benefits everyone.

As for me, Kelly, listeners are well aware of my fascination with parasites, and keeping humans from suffering from them. On the show, we've talked about the eradication of smallpox, efforts to control hookworm, and how public health measures got trichinella under control in the United States.

I've personally been making monthly donations to Doctors Without Borders for years. Pick the most devastating crisis you can think of in recent years, and it's nearly certain that Doctors Without Borders was there to help the people suffering through the crisis. I even remember reading about their stories when Doctors Without Borders swooped into Ebola-ridden regions to save lives. Their doctors put themselves in harm's way to help those in the most need, and I’m happy to support them so they have the equipment and supplies required to continue their lifesaving work.
