# Homelessness Isn't Caused by Bad Weather
Every spring, I face the same reality that keeps me awake at night.
The Warming Center is only funded to operate during the coldest months of the year. We open our doors when winter temperatures become dangerous, providing a warm place to sleep, a meal, and safety for people who have nowhere else to go.
But homelessness doesn't end when our season ends.
This year, when we closed our doors, I had to look families in the eye and tell them we no longer had a bed for them. I had to send elderly guests with serious medical conditions back out into the community with nowhere safe to sleep. Some found a bench. Some slept in vehicles. Others simply disappeared from our radar as snow continued to fall.
One encounter has stayed with me. After the shelter closed, we met an 84-year-old grandmother with no teeth and no safe place to go. The weather didn't care that our funding had run out. The snow didn't stop because the calendar said winter was over.
As I watched vulnerable people face another cold night outside, I realized something important: homelessness is not caused by bad weather.
Bad weather simply exposes how fragile our safety net really is.
People become homeless because of rising rents, medical crises, disabilities, job loss, domestic violence, mental illness, family breakdown, and circumstances that can happen to any of us. Those challenges exist every day of the year—not just in winter.
That is why our community needs more than a seasonal shelter. We need a permanent home. A place where people can find safety, stability, and support every month of the year. A place where families don't have to wonder where they will sleep. A place where seniors and people with medical conditions are not forced back onto the streets simply because a season has ended.
My goal is simple: I never want to close our doors again.
With your support, we can secure our own building, expand to year-round operations, and create a lasting solution that meets people where they are. Together, we can build a future where no one is turned away because the calendar changed.
Because homelessness doesn't end in April.
And neither should our response.
