Description
My HomeCourt [MHC] is a nonprofit organization that revitalizes public basketball courts across the city of Providence, Rhode Island and transforms the courts into significant works of public art. (www.myhomecourt.org)
Everyone should have a homecourt— a safe place to play ball, build community, learn teamwork, and express creativity. Our goal is to refurbish *every* PVD Parks public basketball court in Providence ... 35 courts in all.
It costs $125,000 to install a mural on a court, a lasting work of art that is a neighborhood anchor. Our 2026 court honors Sam Chionuma, a beloved son, Veteran, and community member who was shot and killed trying to break up a fight. With Sam's family, MHC wants to create a lasting legacy by building a space of play, learning, and joy in his memory.
Sam's court will be designed by artist Crystalle Lacouture and will be professionally installed by skilled mural painters, ensuring the mural remains vibrant for years to come.
The Sam Chionuma court is My HomeCourt's eighth basketball court in Providence. Our collaborations with exceptional, internationally-recognized artists have created a network of beautiful and functional public art for the city. Our previous artists include: Jim Drain (2018), Joiri Minaya & Jordan Seaberry (2019), Andrea Bergart (2020), Lois Harada (2022), Sanford Biggers (2023), and Trenton Doyle Hancock (2025)
