Description

This Earth Day, consider making a difference by supporting various non-profit organizations helping to preserve Utah’s Great Salt Lake.

In recent years, the Great Salt Lake has faced unprecedented challenges. In October 2021, its surface elevation dropped to 4,190.2 feet above sea level, surpassing the historic low set in 1963. Subsequently, in November 2022, it reached another record low of 4,188.5 feet above sea level.

As water levels decline, the lake's salinity intensifies, posing significant threats to its delicate ecosystem. This decline not only affects the lake's food web but also jeopardizes the millions of migratory birds that rely on this unique habitat.

The consequences of a shrinking Great Salt Lake are far-reaching, with local and regional impacts including increased dust, deteriorating air quality, diminished snowfall, restricted lake access, habitat loss, proliferation of invasive plant species, and adverse economic effects on the state.

Great Salt Lake Audubon is dedicated to protecting and enhancing habitat for wild birds, animals and plants, and to maintaining healthy and diverse environments for wildlife and people throughout the state. Currently they are involved in Great Salt Lake conservation efforts, helping protect the 10 million migratory birds that visit the lake.

Friends of the Great Salt Lake is a nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and protect the Great Salt Lake ecosystem and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the Lake through education, research, advocacy and the arts.

The Nature Conservancy’s Utah chapter has worked for more than 20 years to protect the Great Salt Lake and its wetlands. TNC’s Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve protects more than almost 11 miles of critical wetland and upland habitat along the Great Salt Lake’s eastern shore.
