Across the U.S. and in the San Francisco Bay Area, families face a critical childcare shortage, and finding safe, reliable care is harder than ever for parents of infants and toddlers. Many families turn to nannies, aunties, babysitters, and neighbors, yet this segment of the childcare world is often invisible and unsupported, with no consistent expectations for training, safety, or quality.

For the past 10 years, The Institute for Families and Nannies has been working to change that by professionalizing in-home and family, friend, and neighbor childcare. Our mission is to build the supply of affordable, high-quality in-home childcare through job training and clear pathways to higher education for caregivers.

Our programs train caregivers to develop professional portfolios that include resumes, background checks, CPR/First Aid training, references, vaccination records, and driving records, giving families the transparency and confidence they need. We also teach providers how to offer “share care,” how to find employment with right-fit families, and provide foundational health and safety training so children can thrive in nurturing, developmentally appropriate environments.

By investing in caregivers, we are strengthening an essential part of the childcare system that families already rely on every day. This work not only opens doors to better jobs and continued education for caregivers, but also expands access to safe, stable, and affordable care for children across our community.
