Description

Securing the Bio-Digital Frontier

Our careers—navigating diplomacy across many different international borders and early involvement with open information technology—have taught us a foundational truth: The underlying infrastructure of our world determines who thrives and who gets left behind.

We witnessed the birth and scaling of open-source software. It wasn't just a technological shift; it was an ideological democratization. Open code sought to help dismantled corporate monopolies, bypass geographic boundaries, and put world-changing capabilities directly into the hands of builders everywhere.

Today, humanity is at a new, even higher-stakes frontier. We are no longer engineering software; we are programming biology.

With the acceleration of generative biological AI, researchers can now model novel proteins, design synthetic enzymes for bioremediation, and sequence entire environmental genomes in real-time. This infrastructure holds the promises of mitigating ecological collapse, intercepting pandemics, and driving climate adaptation.

However, a familiar and hazardous geopolitical race is underway. If corporate consolidation patterns repeat, a handful of commercial conglomerates will capture these biological blueprints. The genetic code of our planet’s remaining biodiversity will be locked behind proprietary paywalls. A university in a developing economy or a local community facing an environmental crisis will be financially barred from the very science required to endure.

We cannot afford to let this vital data be monopolized. That is why we are utilizing this campaign to help establish Bio-Digital Open Warehouses.

To translate this vision into concrete reality, we have selected foundational public charities that build the digital architecture, open legal frameworks, and localized physical endpoints required to secure this future. By supporting this campaign, you are directly funding:

Center for Open Science, Inc. (COS):

Securing the Digital Infrastructure

COS maintains the Open Science Framework (OSF), the premier open-source repository where decentralized biological researchers securely store, version, and share massive genetic sequences and biological data, ensuring this critical information remains permanently in the public domain and immune to corporate paywalls.

BioBricks Foundation, Inc.:

Securing the Legal Frameworks.

Founded by synthetic biology engineers and pioneers, BioBricks developed the Open Material Transfer Agreement (OpenMTA), establishing the open legal architecture that allows global scientists and community labs to freely share digital biological parts, enzymes, and DNA sequences without restrictive proprietary patent fees.

Biotech Without Borders:

Securing Localized Physical Endpoints.

This dedicated charity democratizes biotechnology by providing the essential ground-level infrastructure—low-cost community biolabs, open-source resources, and technical workshops—needed for citizen scientists to utilize open genetic blueprints locally to tackle urgent regional health and environmental crises.

BosLab Inc.:

Securing Community Transparency.

Operating an independent, public-interest laboratory outside of traditional corporate and academic silos, BosLab trains civic researchers to leverage open biological registries for applied, community-driven projects ranging from regional ecological tracking to localized bioremediation.

Years ago, open-source AI in healthcare was considered an obscure, highly theoretical niche; today, it scales global medicine. Bio-digital open infrastructure is at that exact same raw, pivotal inflection point. It is mathematically complex, poorly understood by traditional philanthropy, and critically underfunded.

We invite you to join us in securing a future where the code of biology remains open, equitable, and free for all of humanity.

Whether you’re raising funds for a global non-profit or a school booster program, it’s easy to give together with Daffy Campaigns. Leverage unique features such as matching, multi-charity support, donation impact, and more.

By donating on this page you are making an irrevocable contribution to Daffy Charitable Fund, a 501(c)(3) public charity, and a subsequent donation recommendation to the charity listed above, subject to our Member Agreement. Contributions are generally eligible for a charitable tax-deduction and a yearly consolidated receipt will be provided by Daffy. Processing fees may be applied and will reduce the value available to send to the end charity. The recipient organizations have not provided permission for this listing and have not reviewed the content.

Donations to campaigns are distributed to the recipient charities on a weekly basis. In the rare event that Daffy is unable to fulfill the donation request to this charity, you will be notified and given the opportunity to choose another charity. This may occur if the charity is unresponsive or if the charity is no longer in good standing with regulatory authorities.
