Mission

Our mission is to empower people with disabilities at work, at home and within communities of their choice. We advance our mission through a comprehensive network of health and human services throughout Connecticut and Westchester County NY.

About

Residential continuum of care: We help more than 500 Connecticut adults with special needs live with dignity in safe, comfortable, accessible housing. Hands-on support ranges from 2 to 24 hours per day. It includes rehabilitation, nursing, life-skills training, career training, behavioral support and direct supervision by staff. In 2018, Ability Beyond continued to emerge as national leaders in building comfortable, community-based homes to accommodate people with special needs as they age. Our use of technology to create 'smart homes' that increase privacy while reducing cost has also drawn national attention and significant yet continually-declining state funding in Connecticut and New York. The macro-burst of May 15, 2018 posed logistical and financial challenges to Ability Beyond. The macro-burst had maximum wind speeds of 100 to 110 miles per hour, according to a statement from the weather service. It impacted an area of land two and a half miles wide and five miles long as it coursed through Connecticut neighborhoods where Ability Beyond has residential homes for the disabled individuals we serve. Two Brookfield homes had extensive damage from fallen trees and major roof, window, siding repairs and tree removal. One home in particular needed so much additional repair that funds set aside for a planned renovation elsewhere had to be utilized for a complete renovation of the Brookfield home because of such severe damage. Adding to the logistical challenges were the relocation of residents (as a group rather than separate their family unit) to other homes that could accommodate their needs and the relocation of people from those homes (as a group) to other residences. Additionally, two Ability Beyond vehicles and one residential van in Connecticut were destroyed from fallen trees from the macro-burst, and Ability Beyond incurred costs for tree removal uncovered by insurance. Total cost from the storm exceeded $125,000.
