About
As an independent nonprofit organization, Bay Area Lyme is able to partner with leading researchers and institutions all across the country to support the most innovative and promising projects in Lyme disease research, regardless of affiliation. True breakthroughs will occur only through well-designed research projects and at Bay Area Lyme, we have a rigorous screening and monitoring process, grant contingencies, and project reporting, to ensure that projects are effectively designed and funds well spent. In 2018, Bay Area Lyme Foundation funded 7 grants averaging over a $125,000 per award to various institutions across the country. Among the awards was a multi-year joint grant to Stanford University and Tulane University to design and develop therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of Lyme disease. Ecology research projects included the citizen-scientist study to evaluate the prevalence of disease-carrying ticks throughout the United States. The study is based on a massive sample of more than 16,000 ticks collected from 49 U.S. states and Puerto Rico over a 20 month period.
