About

MOXIE Theatre's yearly programming includes four to five fully staged professional productions of works by female-identified playwrights. The production teams behind each show include many diverse women+, particularly young female designers working in fields traditionally dominated by their male counterparts, like lighting and scenic design. MOXIE Theatres main stage productions take place at their space in the San Diego College Area. Each show runs for four-five weeks, with four performances per week, and reaches about 2,000 people from all San Diego communities.MOXIE Theatre is proud to be one of the most accessible theatre companies to San Diego residents, while also being one of the most awarded. With tickets ranging from $15-$48, MOXIE Theatre patrons have the opportunity to see high quality theatre at a price point that is affordable, which makes MOXIE Theatres audience one of the most inclusive among San Diego theatres. According to audience surveys, MOXIE Theatre is reaching a younger audience than many other theatres in San Diego (30% of their audience is 30-60, 10% under 30), and theyre seeing significant increase in diversity, African-American and Latinx being the largest groups beside white audiences. Data also show 75% of their audience is female, in line with the theatres mission of representing women+s voices, and 18% identify as LGBTQ+. While the largest demographic at MOXIE Theatre remains white audiences over 60, they see a growing diversity among their patrons, reflective of the diversity of their programming. MOXIE Theatre believes that live theatre should be accessible to everyone and, continuing in their long-standing commitment to local students, provides tickets at no cost to San Diego Countys High School students for all shows in their seasons that run during the school year. This is possible thanks to the support of MOXIE Theatres donors. In addition to the productions on their main stage, in 2018 MOXIE Theatre launched a new program to be presented in schools all over San Diego. The G.E.W. (Gender Equality Workshop) Play, is an interactive theatrical performance that engages students 3rd-5th grades, and fosters age-appropriate conversations about gender equality. The development of this program was made possible by the support of The City of San Diegos CPPS funding, and MOXIE Theatre is proud to offer it at zero cost to schools, thereby removing socio-economic barriers to accessing the arts and vital conversations about gender bias, and to every childs power to become a future leader of gender equality.MOXIE Theatre's yearly programming also includes their Community Engagement events such as ongoing series of free educational opportunities for patrons that bring professionals and experts from the community to the stage to engage the audience in post-show discussions around the themes of each production. Professors from UCSD, USD, SDSU, and Grossmont College, as well as community representatives such as City Council representatives, regularly participate in free panel discussions on important topics such as gender, race, agism and LGBTQ+ representation. Multiple of these free educational events are programmed during the run of each show in MOXIE Theatre's Season.MOXIE Theatre also develops new talent each year through their 10 Minute Play Festival in partnership with SDSU. This event provides opportunities for young playwrights to work alongside local professional directors and actors to produce a series of new short plays which are debuted in an evening of performances open to the public. MOXIE Theatre artists donate their time to provide this opportunity at no cost to the SDSU students, and welcomes the community to see the production for tickets as low as $5. Finally, one of MOXIE Theatre's most exciting yearly events is "The MOXIE Awards Ceremony." This unique event honors ten women+ who are making San Diego a better place to live. Honorees are selected by an independent committee from a wide selection of nominees submitted by the community. Honorees come from all over San Diego County and include women+ in business, government, non-profit, medicine, education, the arts, and more. The event brings together philanthropists, community members, and art supporters, and gives visibility and media coverage to an array of institutions making a positive impact on our community.
