About

BCGP CONTINUES TO PLAY A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN THE CIRCUIT TRAILS COALITION. SINCE OUR REGIONAL PLANNER JOINED STAFF IN MAY 2017, ALL NINE COUNTIES AND OVER 100 TOTAL GOVERNMENTS IN GREATER PHILADELPHIA HAVE ADOPTED RESOLUTIONS IN FAVOR OF BUILDING 500 MILES OF CIRCUIT TRAILS BY 2025. WE HAVE GONE FROM TWO ACTIVE VOLUNTEER-LED COUNTY AFFILIATE GROUPS TO EIGHT. AT THE STATE LEVEL, IN 2017, OUR ADVOCACY RESULTED IN THE ELIMINATION OF PENNDOT'S ONEROUS BICYCLE OCCUPANCY PERMIT. SINCE THAT TIME, SEVERAL NEW SUBURBAN BIKE LANES HAVE BEEN BUILT, AND BY THE END OF THE 2019 PAVING SEASON THERE WILL BE OVER 20% MORE BIKE LANE MILEAGE IN THE SUBURBAN COUNTIES. ADDITIONALLY, WE WERE SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING RED LIGHT CAMERA LEGISLATION PASSED IN THE PA LEGISLATURE. THE CAMERAS WILL BE INSTALLED ON ROOSEVELT BOULEVARD IN 2019. ON THE CITY LEVEL, WE COMPLETED OUR SIX LISTENING SESSIONS, HELD IN ACCORDANCE WITH AARP PA AND THE VISION ZERO ALLIANCE, PUT TOGETHER A FINAL REPORT AND PRESENTED ABOUT THE SESSIONS AT THE 2019 VISION ZERO CONFERENCE. AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF SLOW INSTALLATION OF PROTECTED BIKE LANES, A NUMBER OF NEW STREETS RECEIVED PROTECTION, INCLUDING 11TH STREET AND 6TH STREET, WERE PROTECTED. 11TH STREET IS PHILADELPHIA'S SECOND 2-WAY PROTECTED BIKE LANE, AND FIRST IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. BASED ON WHERE THE CITY IS NOW, THERE WILL LIKELY BE 20 MILES OF PROTECTED BIKE LANES IN PHILADELPHIA BY THE END OF 2020. AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF ADVOCACY, THE BICYCLE COALITION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA WORKED WITH COUNCILWOMAN CHERELLE PARKER'S OFFICE TO PASS THE SPEED CAMERA BILL THROUGH CITY COUNCIL -- SOMETHING THAT'S NEEDED TO ENABLE THE LEGISLATION, AND THE CAMERAS WILL LIKELY BE INSTALLED BY THE END OF 2019. THE BICYCLE COALITION ALSO WORKED WITH COUNCILMAN KENYATTA JOHNSON'S OFFICE TO PASS A BILL THAT WOULD ALLOW BUSINESSES ON STREETS WITH BIKE LANES TO GET THE INSTALLATION FEE FOR A LOADING ZONE WAVED; WE ADVOCATED FOR THIS BILL SO THAT BUSINESSES CAN WORK WITH THE CYCLING COMMUNITY TO MAKE STREETS SAFER.A $9 MILLION PROJECT TO BUILD THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BRIDGE ADA- ACCESSIBLE BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN RAMP WAS COMPLETED BY THE DELAWARE RIVER PORT AUTHORITY, CAPPING A 13-YEAR ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN. THE NEW RAMP WAS COMPLETED IN JUNE OF 2019, AND IS THE ONLY SAFE BIKE/PED CONNECTION BETWEEN PHILADELPHIA AND NEW JERSEY.
