The legal department engages in both litigation and non-litigation legal advocacy across the state of Florida. At any given time, the department is involved in dozens of investigations, research assignments, advocacy efforts, and cases. With staff attorneys across the state of Florida, additional legal staff in Miami, and in cooperation the cooperating counsel across the state, the department litigates cases across the spectrum of civil liberties, including voting rights, immigration, criminal-justice issues, LGBTQ rights, and reproductive freedom, among others. Through an integrated-advocacy model, the department also collaborates with, supports, and is supported by every other department in the organization in order to advance the cause of civil liberties both in and out of court, including with government agencies and before legislative bodies.
