Mabou Mines is an artist-driven experimental collective, generating original works and re-imagined adaptations of classic works through multi-disciplinary, technologically inventive collaborations among its members and a wide world of contemporary filmmakers, composers, writers, musicians, choreographers, puppeteers and visual artists. In addition, Mabou Mines is dedicated to fostering and developing the next generation of artists through the Mabou Mines/Suite, Resident Artist Program (RAP) and SUITE/Space.

About

Mabou Mines had our first full season in our new facility at the 122CC. In our 48th season we premiered a new work Faust 2.0, a multi-media re-imagining of Goethe's Faust, Part II adapted by Matthew Maguire and directed by Co-Artistic Director Sharon Fogarty; continued development on several new works; hosted the second season of our SUITE/Space program and the 29th of our Resident Artist Program (RAP); and we continued our subsidized rental program to the downtown performance community. Mainstage premiere Faust 2.0, a multi-media re-imagining of Goethe's Faust, Part II received its premiere March 2019 in the Mabou Mines Theater. In this adaption by Matthew Maguire and directed by Co-Artistic Director Sharon Fogarty, Faust was exemplified as the representative/example of the contemporary man: a global plutocrat utilizing coercion to gain more profit. The award-winning collaborative team included set designer Jim Clayburgh (Wooster Group), composer Eve Beglarian (Alpert Award), video designer Jeff Sugg (Obie), costume designer by Marsha Ginsberg (Obie) and performers Benton Greene (Obie & Lucielle Lortel), Bill Raymond (The Wire), Greg Mehrten (Wooster Group), and Paul Kandel (Tony nominee). The production received 16 performances between March - 2019, and welcomed over 700 audience members. SUITE/Space Our second season of SUITE/Space provided four artists?of color from historically underrepresented communities with development support and a three-performance run of their productions in Mabou Mines 99-seat theater in the East Village. Our 2018/19 SUITE/Space open call for artists garnered 75 responses from its five-week RFP window. The curators and artistic advisors were Mabou Mines Co-Artistic Director Karen Kandel and newly appointed Associate Artist Carl Hancock Rux. The curators selected performing artists Cinthia Chen, Marcelle Davies-Lashley, Cristina Pitter and Edisa Weeks. The performances took place in a festival-like setting from January 31 - February 6, 2019 with each artist performing three performances. Resident Artist Program Our 48th season wrapped up in May as we presented the free showings of the work generated from our Mabou Mines Resident Artist Program. Having just completed its 29th year, this cornerstone program offered five emerging artists the opportunity to work in residence at Mabou Mines from January through June 2019. The 2019 residents were selected and announced December 2018. The artists included Arpita Mukherjee/Hypokrit Theatre Company's piece "Elements", Leonie Bell, Marcella Murray and Hyung Seok Jeon's "I Don't Want to Interrupt You Guys", Hannah Mitchells "Warm Line", Dara Malina and Lacy Rose's "The Passion According to GH" and Sugar Vendil's "Antonym". The final free works-in-progress showings occurred June 1723, 2019.Works in Development The company continued development on several new projects including Vicksburg Project by Karen Kandel and Eve Beglarian, directed by Mallory Catlett and performed by Karen Kandel; Medea by Olga Taxidou, directed by Lee Breuer and performed by Maude Mitchell; Texts for Nothing by Samuel Beckett, directed by Sharon Fogarty and performed by Irish actor Paul Ronan.
