About

CO-DEVELOPED BY AMERICAN COMMUNITIES TRUST INC. (ACT), AND THE BALTIMORE FOOD HUB, INC. (BFH), THE BALTIMORE FOOD HUB PROJECT WILL RESTORE A BLIGHTED 125 YEAR OLD WATER PUMPING STATION TO CREATE A THRIVING CAMPUS OF COMMERCIAL AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITY. BY CO-LOCATING BOTH FOOD AND GENERAL BUSINESSES ON A 3.5 ACRE CAMPUS, THIS $27 MILLION PROJECT PLANTS A NEW ECONOMIC ENGINE IN EAST BALTIMORE, WHERE MANY RESIDENTS FACE RATES OF UNEMPLOYMENT, VACANCY, AND POOR HEALTH OUTCOMES THAT ARE AMONG THE HIGHEST IN THE CITY.CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.COMPLETED IN 2017, PHASE 1 INVOVLED THE INVESTMENT OF $7.5 MILLION TO COMPLETE ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION, SITE WORK, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN 8,000 SQUARE FOOT SPACE FOR TEACHING AND COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION KITCHENS. THE NEW FACILITY IS LEASED TO HUMANIM, INC. FOR ITS CATERING BUSINESS, CITY SEED. WITH A MISSION OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, HUMANIM ALSO RUNS EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR ASPIRING FOOD ENTREPRENEURS AND LEASES SOME OF ITS KITCHEN SPACES TO EMERGING FOOD ENTREPRENEURS, AS PART OF AN INCUBATION PROGRAM. WITH COMPLETED PREDEVELOPMENT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE CAMPUS, PHASE 2 ACCELERATED IN OCTOBER 2018. PHASE 2 INVOLVES THE INVESTMENT OF AN ADDITIONAL $4.5 MILLION TO FULLY REHABILITATE A 9,980 SQUARE FOOT OFFICE BUILDING. PHASE 2 ALSO INCLUDES: PLACING NEW ROOFS ON HISTORIC STABLES THAT WILL BE ADAPTIVELY REUSED AS OFFICE AND RETAIL SPACE IN A LATER PHASE; ADDITIONAL SITE WORK; AND PLACING AN ARCHITECTURAL FINISH OVER THE OPENINGS OF TWO MOTHBALLED BUILDINGS THAT WILL BE ADAPTIVELY REUSED AS FOOD RETAIL AND BREWERY SPACE IN A LATER PHASE. WHILE PHASE 2 WILL BE COMPLETE IN FALL 2019, ACT AND BFH EXPECT TO COMPLETE FUTURE PHASES IN 2021. ACT IS COMMITTED TO BRINGING MARKET RATE COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY TO THE SITE. AS THE SITE IS COMPLETED, ACT WILL LEASE SPACE IN HISTORIC BUILDINGS TO GROWING BUSINESSES THAT SHARE THE VISION FOR THE BALTIMORE FOOD HUB AND INTEND TO HIRE LOCALLY, PROVIDE ON THE JOB TRAINING, AND PAY LIVING WAGES.ACT IS SEEKING A PARTNER TO OPERATE A FOOD HALL AND MARKET IN ONE OF ITS BUILDINGS. THIS WOULD BRING MUCH NEEDED VIBRANCY AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY TO THE NORTH OF THE TRACKS NEIGHBORHOODS, WHILE CREATING A NEW DESTINATION FOR RESIDENTS, INCLUDING WORKFORCE AND STUDENTS IN THE EBDI FOOTPRINTAND AT THE JOHNS HOPKINS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCHOOL. IT WOULD ALSO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL, WOMAN, AND MINORITY FOOD ENTREPRENEURS TO GROW THEIR BUSINESSES.
