Mission

The Food Co-Op Initiative (FCI) was created with the primary goal of supporting and encouraging new food co-op development across the United States. To meet that goal, FCI plans to provide extensive learning tools, development guidelines, resource databases, personal consultation and training. FCI assists groups in both urban and rural areas to bring a source of healthy food, a stable business, and meaningful jobs to the citizens of the communities with which FCI assists

About

Food Co-Op Initiative helped plan and participate in the Consumer Cooperative Management Conference, co-hosted the Up and Coming Conference for Startup Food Co-Ops, co-hosted the Small & Strong Conference, planned and presented at the California Co-Op Conference, the Neighboring Food Co-Op Association and the Rural Grocery Initiative Summit. We provided consultations for startup organizers across the U.S., organized regional peer networks, developed new training publications and conducted on-site intensive training for several food co-ops. We began focused research on the viability of food co-ops in small rural communities and have compiled case studies and recommendations for food co-ops that seek to take over privately-owned stores when they would otherwise close. We provided support to over 105 active startup groups and fielded inquiries from over 90 communities considering food co-op development.
