Mission

The mission of SwimRVA is to elevate aquatics in the Richmond region, making water safety and aquatic fitness more accessible to all. Specifically we aim to be a catalyst for water safety, health and wellness, sports tourism and competitive swimming.

About

Learn to swim: Teach every second grade child in Richmond how to swim. We provide cost free swimming lessons to second graders in 5 jurisdictions throughout the Richmond region. SwimRVA is working to implement along with partner agencies a seven lesson curriculum in 138 elementary schools across 9 jurisdictions. This fiscal year 1,910 second grade students participated from 22 schools, 17 of which were designated as title 1. Since inception, SwimRVA has taught children through the cost free program. The need is staggering as 78% of children in the US from households with income under 50,000 will never learn to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for kids under 14 and African-American children drown at rates five times that of the rest of the population.
