About

CANINES WITH A CAUSE WAS ORGANIZED IN 2010 WITH THE INTENT TO SAVE HEALTHY, ADOPTABLE DOGS FROM LOCAL SHELTERS AND PLACE THEM WITH WAR VETERANS AS LOVING COMPANIONS AND ASSISTANCE DOGS. WITH OUR EXPANSION INTO THE UTAH STATE PRISON SIX YEARS AGO, WE WERE ABLE TO RESCUE MORE DOGS AND FIND THEM HOMES WITH THOSE IN NEED OF COMFORT AND/OR SERVICE. TO DATE, CWAC HAS PLACED OVER 500 DOGS WITH VETERANS AND PROVIDED NEEDED TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR THE TEAM. FIFTY-SIX DOGS WERE PLACED WITH VETERANS IN 2018, SOME OF THE TEAMS HAVE GRADUATED AS SERVICE TEAMS, OTHERS ARE STILL IN TRAINING. THE BENEFITS OF THIS PROGRAM ARE THREE-FOLD. ACCORDING TO THE SALT LAKE CITY VA HOSPITAL, BETWEEN 5-7 VETERANS ARE COMMITTING SUICIDE WEEKLY IN THE NORTHERN UTAH AREA. OVER 18,000 COMPANION ANIMALS WERE KILLED IN UTAH SHELTERS IN 2017. RECIDIVISM AMONG UTAH'S PRISONERS IS AT 46%. BY BRINGING THE DOGS TOGETHER WITH BOTH INMATES AND VETERANS, CWAC'S PROGRAMS SAVE THE LIVES OF DOGS IN NEED, HELP VETERANS FIND WAYS TO KEEP LIVING AND COPING, AND TEACH PRISONERS WORK AND LIFE SKILLS THAT HELP THEM GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. OVER THE PAST YEAR OUR PROGRAMS HAVE EXPANDED TO NORTHERN NEVADA AND IDAHO. WE RESCUE AND TRAIN DOGS IN THE WARM SPRING CORRECTIONAL IN CARSON CITY, NV (INCARCERATED VETERANS TRAINING DOGS FOR VETERANS) AND IDAHO CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION-OROFINO. THE DOGS LIVE AND TRAIN WITH OFFENDERS, THIS IS NOT ONLY A COST-EFFICIENT WAY TO TRAIN, THE DOGS GIVE THE OFFENDERS A CHANCE FOR REDEMPTION AND REFORM. IT ALSO ALLOWS US TO RESCUE MORE DOGS AND ASSESS/TRAIN THEM FOR PLACEMENT WITH VETERANS. CWAC ALSO IMPLEMENTED A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR VETERANS IN THE RENO-CARSON CITY AREA WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RENO, NV, VA HOSPITAL. IN 2018 THE PROGRAM HAD EIGHT VETERAN/DOG TEAMS IN TRAINING. CWAC ALSO PLACES DOGS IN VA SPONSORED SUBSTANCE ABUSE FACILITY, ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY IS A PART OF THE RECOVERY PROCESS FROM DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION. THE PROGRAM HAS HELPED US RESEARCH THE EFFECTS OF DOGS AND TRAINING ON RECOVERY.
