About

Through-out 2018 UNCF has been actively involved in the initial development and promotion of three programs that support UNCF's mission: King Technology Ventures (KTV) KTV promotes biomedical technology research into practical and marketable medical devices. The 'Concept to Prototype" po1iion of the KTV program is currently supporting the development of an innovative heart repair device. KTV continues Dr. Liu's passion for biomedical engineering research and device invention. All members of the KTV Advisory Council are former associates of the University of Northern California's (UNC) Science and Technology Innovation Center (STIC) and were integrally involved in the incubation of UNC's start-up companies Osseon and Sapheon. (prototype research $46,000 expense) Asian Medicinal Botanicals (AMB) The main focus of the AMB program during 2018 was to conduct preliminary research regarding the growing of Asian medicinal herbs using hydroponic methods. One of Dr. Liu's perpetual annoyances was his inability as an acupuncturist to obtain and prescribe fresh, organic, and locally grown Asian medications. The AMB program addresses Dr Liu's concerns and provides a source for local acupuncturists to obtain herbal medications they can trust. The choice to research hydroponic growing methods is based on the desire to accelerate the herbs' maturation timeline, while being responsive to environmental concerns regarding reduction in water consumption. ($27,000 research expense) LiveLifeResources (LLR) UNCF collaborates with LiveLifeResources to offer progranuning that promotes the Foundation's educational and research interests in the empowerment of people and communities in becoming more resilient. Over the past year online courses have been offered in Violence Prevention; and Cultivating the Characteristics of Resilience for Health and Well-Being. Both courses include a research component. The person who developed the University of Northern California's online Emergency Management program is also the developer for UNCF's current online courses. (online education and research $4,600 expense)
