EXHIBITIONSTHE MUSEUM PROMOTES AN AWARENESS AND INTEREST IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART BY DISPLAYING, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COMMUNITY, SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS OF HIGH ARTISTIC MERIT. THE PAST YEAR'S MAJOR EXHIBITS INCLUDED: FRONT: AN AMERICAN CITY: ELEVEN CULTURAL EXERCISES, JEFF DONALDSON: DIG AND ALLISON ZUCKERMAN: PIRATE AND MUSE, AND NICK CAVE: FEAT.THE FRONT EXHIBITION OPENED IN JULY 2018 AND RAN THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2018. THIS EXHIBITION WAS THE FIRST EDITION OF FRONT INTERNATIONAL: CLEVELAND TRIENNIAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, A MULTI-VENUE EXHIBITION THAT SPANNED CLEVELAND, AKRON AND OBERLIN. MORE THAN 115 NATIONAL, INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL ARTISTS PARTICIPATED IN EXHIBITIONS ACROSS THE REGION, MANY PRODUCING NEW WORK IN RESPONSE TO THE HISTORIES AND PRESENT-DAY SOCIAL FABRIC OF NORTHEAST OHIO COMMUNITIES. AKRON ART MUSEUM PRESENTED THE MOST EXPANSIVE EXHIBITION OF THE FRONT VENUES WITH ARTWORKS AND INSTALLATIONS BY FIFTEEN ARTISTS FROM THE U.S., EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA, THE MIDDLE EAST AND ASIA. THE ARTWORK OFFERED NEW PERSPECTIVES ON AKRON'S LANDSCAPE, NEIGHBORHOODS AND SOCIOECONOMIC DIVISIONS AND INTRODUCES A WIDE RANGE OF RELATED ISSUES INCLUDING INVENTION AND OBSOLESCENCE, OPTIMISM AND ASPIRATION. THIS EXHIBITION IS SPONSORED BY THE JOHN S. KNIGHT FOUNDATION, THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL, J.M. SMUCKER COMPANY, BUCKINGHAM, DOOLITTLE, AND BURROUGHS, ASCVB, AND THE MARY AND DR. GEORGE L. DEMETROS CHARITABLE TRUST.JEFF DONALDSON: DIG AND ALLISON ZUCKERMAN: PIRATE AND MUSE. JEFF DONALDSON INCORPORATED BRILLIANT COLORS, ELABORATE PATTERNS AND SYMBOLS FROM AFRICAN CULTURES INCLUDING EGYPTIAN, ASHANTI AND SENUFO INTO HIS PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND PRINTS THROUGHOUT HIS MORE THAN 40-YEAR CAREER. JEFF DONALDSON WAS A SCHOLAR OF BOTH AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN ART AND EARNED A PHD FROM NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY IN 1974. ALLISON ZUCKERMAN'S LARGE-SCALE CANVASES DISPLAYED FIGURES WHO ARE BOTH BIG AND LOUD. THEIR LARGE, OPEN MOUTHS, WIDE-OPEN EYES, VARYING DEGREES OF UNDRESS, OVER-SIZED TEARDROPS, HAIR THAT FLIES SIDEWAYS AS IF THEY ARE ON A ROLLERCOASTER, AND UNSELFCONSCIOUS MISMATCHED BODIES TOGETHER CONVEY A SENSE OF HYSTERIA. ZUCKERMAN STATES, "I WANT THE WOMEN TO BE PHYSICALLY INTIMIDATING, WHICH PLAYS INTO THE IDEA OF OVERTURNING THEIR SUBMISSION. THEREFORE, THEY ARE BIG, WITH GIGANTIC HANDS THAT ARE OFF-PUTTING BUT ALSO BEAUTIFUL, OWING TO THEIR CUBIST ROOTS. I WANT THE CANVASES TO BE LARGE, AND I WANT THE BODIES TO BE LARGE, SO THAT IF THEY STEPPED OUT OF THE PICTURE PLANE THEY WOULD BE FORCES TO BE RECKONED WITH THEY'RE KIND OF LIKE GODZILLA WOMEN."NICK CAVE: FEAT THIS EXHIBITION WAS ORGANIZED BY THE AKRON ART MUSEUM AND IS SPONSORED BY FUNDING FROM THE JAMES L. AND JOHN S. KNIGHT FOUNDATION AND THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL. THE SINGULAR WORKS OF CHICAGO-BASED ARTIST NICK CAVE ARE OPTICAL DELIGHTS BURSTING WITH COLOR AND TEXTURE THAT ARE ENJOYED BY AUDIENCES OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS. THEY ALSO SPEAK TO ISSUES OF IDENTITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE SPECIFICALLY RACE, GUN VIOLENCE AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY. MOST OF CAVE'S ARTWORKS ARE MADE BY TRANSFORMING UNWANTED EVERYDAY ITEMS SUCH AS BUTTONS, PLASTIC HAIR-BEADS, OLD TOYS AND DOMESTIC TEXTILES INTO ART. HIS WELL-KNOWN HUMAN-SHAPED SCULPTURES ("SOUNDSUITS") WERE ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED AS A TYPE OF PROTECTIVE ARMOR IN THE WAKE OF RODNEY KING'S 1992 BEATING BY MEMBERS OF THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE ARTIST HAS STATED, "I STARTED THINKING ABOUT MYSELF MORE AND MORE AS A BLACK MAN AS SOMEONE WHO WAS DISCARDED, DEVALUED, VIEWED AS 'LESS THAN'".OTHER EXHIBITIONS CONTINUING ON VIEW FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:FRAMEWORKS: PAINTINGS BY LOCAL ARTISTS DRAGANA CRNJAK, ANDREA JOKI AND MATTHEW KOLODZIE: EACH OF THESE ARTISTS' APPROACH PAINTING AS A PROCESS OF INQUIRY INTO THE WAY WE UNDERSTAND TIME AND SPACE ALTHOUGH THEY EACH DEPLOY DIFFERENT PROCESSES TO CONDUCT THEIR EXPLORATIONS. DRAGANA CRNJAK APPROACHES PAINTING AS DIAGRAMMING. THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCES OF PLACES DOMINATE THE WAY DRAGNANA PROCESSES THE WORLD AROUND HER. ANDREA JOKI SHIFTS FROM PAINTING IN LOOSE, SPONTANEOUS BRUSHSTROKES TO APPLYING PRECISE HARDEDGE LINES, OFTEN COMBINING BOTH IN ONE COMPOSITION. MATTHEW KOLODZIE PHOTOGRAPHS CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION SITES, WHICH HE DIGITALLY COLLAGES AND THEN TRANSLATES INTO LINE DRAWINGS THAT FORM THE BASIS OF HIS PAINTINGS.JERRY BIRCHFIELD: ASLEEP IN THE DUST KNOWN PRIMARILY FOR HIS WORK AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, JERRY BIRCHFIELD IS DEEPLY ENGAGED IN SCULPTURAL MEDIA. THIS EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL ASPECTS OF THE ARTIST'S MULTIFACETED ART PRACTICE. A CLEVELAND NATIVE, BIRCHFIELD INCORPORATED CROSS-DISCIPLINARY STUDY AND THEORY INTO HIS FORMAL TRAINING IN PHOTOGRAPHY. AS A RESULT, HIS WORK ELUDES SIMPLE CLASSIFICATION AND CHALLENGES US TO RECONSIDER THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN IMAGES AND OBJECTS.BRIAN BRESS: PICTURES BECOME YOU A SERIES OF DIPTYCHS TITLED ORGANIZING THE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE, TWO FIGURES BLINDLY ADORN THEIR HEADS USING ONLY THEIR TOUCH TO GUIDE THEM. BRESS' CHARACTERS AFFIX PHYSICAL OBJECTS, WHICH THE ARTIST SCULPTED OUT OF CLAY AND THEN CAST IN PLASTIC, TO EACH OTHER'S HEAD IN A PRESUMED ATTEMPT TO CREATE A FACE. THE VIEWER IS PRIVY TO THE ENTIRE PROCESS, WHILE THE ARTIST HIMSELF WORKS METHODICALLY UNDER A MASK WITH NO EYEHOLES. THE NET EFFECT OF THESE BLIND AND UNSPOKEN ACTS OF COMMUNICATION IS A BEAUTIFUL, PHILOSOPHICAL AND HUMOROUS REFLECTION ON THE IDEA OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A BEING.PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES THE PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES EXHIBITION FEATURED PLENTY OF LARGE-SCALE VEHICLES SUCH AS BLIMPS, TRUCKS AND STEAM ENGINES. HOWEVER, WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS CRISPER AND EVENTUALLY ICY, YOU MIGHT BE DREAMING ABOUT SUNSHINE AND HOPPING ON ONE OF THE SMALLEST MODES OF TRANSPORT THERE IS: THE HUMBLE BICYCLE.JOE VITONE: FAMILY RECORDS -- THIS IS AN ONGOING PORTRAIT OF VITONE'S EXTENDED FAMILY LIVING IN AND AROUND AKRON, OHIO. BEGUN IN 1998, THIS PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES DOCUMENTS EVOLVING INTERPERSONAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN, SIBLINGS, SPOUSES, COUSINS AND OTHER RELATIONS THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF LIFE IN THE RUST BELT REGION.THE FABRICATORS WILLIAM WEEGE FOUNDED THE JONES ROAD PRINT SHOP AND STABLE (NOW CALLED THE OFF JONES ROAD PRESS) IN 1971 IN BARNEVALD, WISCONSIN WHILE WORKING AS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ART AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN MADISON. HE OPENED UP HIS STUDIO TO ARTISTS INCLUDING SAM GILLIAM, ALAN SHIELDS, LYNDA BENGLIS AND JACK BEAL, OFFERING UP HIS PRINTMAKING EQUIPMENT AND EXPERTISE FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE CREATION OF LIMITED EDITIONS OF FINE ART PRINTS. MERNET LARSEN: THE ORDINARY, REORIENTED MERNET LARSEN MAKES INTRIGUING, HUMOR- AND TENSION-INFUSED PAINTINGS THAT FEATURE GEOMETRIC FIGURES INHABITING SPACE IN WAYS THAT DEFY GRAVITY AND IGNORE CONVENTIONAL PERSPECTIVE. CITING INFLUENCES RANGING FROM JAPANESE UKIYO-E TO ITALIAN RENAISSANCE AND RUSSIAN CONSTRUCTIVIST PAINTING, THE ARTIST STAGES ORDINARY SCENES FRIENDS SITTING AROUND A TABLE, FACULTY IN A MEETING, A COUPLE READING IN BED BUT CONSTRUCTS THEM USING VERTIGINOUS, SKEWED SPATIAL ARRANGEMENTS THAT CONVEY A SENSE OF PRECARIOUSNESS.
