The mission of the Wabash County YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. About

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The Y is committed to nurturing the potential of every youth. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. YMCA youth development programs specifically target at-risk youth using best-practices methods. As a county where 1 in 2 children under 18 are living near the poverty line, this is key. Aquatics: Swimming lessons and safety around water: The world is 71% water and children are 100% curious. The Wabash County YMCA taught drowning prevention to over 300 youth in Wabash County through the Safety Around Water initiative and YUSA Swim Lessons Before and After School Care & Child Watch: Without a safe, structured and supervised environment children are at-risk for potential danger. The YMCA is proud to have provided 656 children with that safe place while parents were unavailable. Summer Learning Loss Prevention: The summer is supposed to be fun and the Y helped 166 individual children have a fun summer through the SPARK Day Camp Program. Half the day was spent on math and reading skills in a fun way and the other half on kids being kids! Field trips to local attractions and games to help teach cooperation. Youth Sports: YMCA sports teach youth skills that last a lifetime. Over 4,000 youth participated in sports programs that taught determination, self-confidence and teamwork just to name a few life skills. HEALTHY LIVING We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. As a result, over 12,000 people in our community are receiving the support, guidance, and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. In 2019, 1 in 4 members who otherwise wouldn't have been able to participate received that opportunity through financial assistance. Healthy Living Coaching Program: Through a partnership with our local hospital four groups of individuals learned about the benefits of exercise and proper nutrition. The goal was to take the knowledge they gained and put that into practice on their own to establish a healthy lifestyle. In total, 56 individuals went through the Coaching program with increased knowledge about nutrition and exercise. Group Exercise: The Wabash County Y offers 39 classes a week to the general membership with 7 additional specialty program offerings (age and diagnosis based). To help build a healthy spirit mind and body for all, we have plenty of group exercise opportunities. Chronic Disease - One of the group exercise classes offered based on a diagnosis is Delay the Disease Parkinson's program. Addressing needs in our community that are underserved or not served at all helps the YMCA reach our goal of strengthening the foundation of community. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The YMCA believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. In Wabash County, we have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs for more than 80 years. We deliver training, resources, and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles. In 2019, we engaged volunteers in work that strengthened our community and paved the way for future generations to thrive. Volunteerism - The YMCA is one of the largest conveners of volunteers in Wabash County. In 2019, 223 individuals volunteered to coach youth sports, make policy on the Board of Directors or help with a special event totaling 3,890 hours. Community Group Support - The YMCA provides space for community groups to meet at no cost. Groups like Success for All which focuses on student achievement in and outside of the school districts; Drug Steering Committee which discusses prevention and treatment tactics; PASTA which stands for Parenting A Second Time Around for grandparents who are raising their grandkids; and a host of other groups that need a space.
