In partnership with Tribes, land management agencies, conservation groups and dedicated volunteers, we pair on the ground field projects, cultural resource stewardship, visitor education, research and advocacy to advance conservation-focused policies and practices to preserve this world class cultural landscape.

FRIENDS OF CEDAR MESA HAS CREATED LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL SUPPORT FOR GREATER PROTECTION OF THE GREATER BEARS EARS AREA THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCATING FOR NATIONAL DESIGNATIONS, SUPPORTING SMART LOCAL POLICY-MAKING, AND ORGANIZING RESEARCH AND VOLUNTEER SERVICE ACTIVITIES. THE ORGANIZATION MONITORS THE WORK AND ACTIONS OF THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT, U.S. FOREST SERVICE, AND THE GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA-ALL TASKED WITH MANAGING RESOURCES IN THE GREATER BEARS EARS AREA. IN 2019, FRIENDS OF CEDAR MESA CONNECTED WITH OVER 5,900 VISITORS AROUND THE GLOBE THROUGH THE BEARS EARS EDUCATION CENTER, A GRASSROOTS VISITOR CENTER THAT ENCOURAGES RESPECTFUL VISITATION OF THE GREATER BEARS EARS REGION. THE CENTER HOSTED 13 EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, LOGGED 1,600 EDUCATIONAL VOLUNTEER HOURS, AND BECAME A HUB FOR COMMUNITY AND EDUCATIONAL GATHERINGS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO FIELDED MORE THAN 100 "VISIT WITH RESPECT" AMBASSADORS TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AT HIGHLY VISITED CULTURAL SITES. VOLUNTEERS LOGGED 5,288 TOTAL VOLUNTEER HOURS. 2,163 HOURS WERE SPENT IN THE FIELD, WHERE VOLUNTEERS DOCUMENTED 121 CULTURAL SITES AND STABILIZED ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, MONITORED CULTURAL SITES FOR DAMAGE, BUILT PROTECTIVE FENCING, AND CLEANED UP TRASH AND GRAFFITI. FRIENDS OF CEDAR MESA ALSO FILED A LAWSUIT TO FIGHT OIL AND GAS LEASING AND ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN ADDITIONAL PUBLIC LANDS ADVOCACY, INCLUDING SUBMITTING 450+ PAGES OF POLICY COMMENTS. FINALLY, FRIENDS OF CEDAR MESA SUPPORTED TRIBES AND PUEBLOS WITH ANCESTRAL TIES TO SOUTHEASTERN UTAH. THE ORGANIZATION ASSISTED FOSTERING TRIBAL AND PUEBLO CONNECTIONS TO THE BEARS EARS LANDSCAPE THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION'S "INDIGENOUS CONNECTIONS" INITAITIVE. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO HOSTED A HISTORIC GATHERING OF THE ALL PUEBLO COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS IN BLUFF, MARKING THE FIRST TIME THE COUNCIL FORMALLY CONVENED ON ITS ANCESTRAL LANDS IN PRESENT-DAY UTAH.
