Founded in 1973, North Kent Connect (NKC) is the hub, the resource center in Northern Kent County. It provides the only services of its kind in the region including: a healthy foods market pantry, the Thrive Empowerment Program, utility and rent assistance, educational classes, senior meals on wheels, intensive case management, free tax preparation, five support pantries, and affordable clothing in its thrift store. Onsite partners are West Michigan Works! (job skills), Arbor Circle (mental health counseling), and the YWCA (domestic abuse counseling). NKC case managers work extensively with Family Promise of Grand Rapids and Mel Trotter Ministries to connect homeless families to housing. NKC serves more than 4,300 people each year in a large geographic area (half of Kent County) from 6 Mile Rd to 22 Mile Rd and east and west to the county lines. It includes Belmont, Cedar Springs, Comstock Park, Gowen, Grant, Greenville, Kent City, Rockford, Sand Lake, and Sparta. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), NKC is funded primarily by individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups, and foundations.
