The Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. (Shils Fund) is committed to furthering the vision of Dr. Edward B. Shils who was a pioneer of Entrepreneurship. The organization endeavors to inspire and enable new generations of entrepreneurs and recognizes those individuals, organizations, and programs that have positively influenced the dental and medical community in the public health arena. In 2018, The Shils Fund held 4 Board Calls, 1 Annual Board Meeting, and 1 Awards Gala in which 8 recipients were honored for their accomplishments of health care leadership, access to care programs, and oral health research. Additionally, at the Gala, the Shils Fund hosted the first Shils Stars Dental Student Competition where 4 groups of dental students presented their innovative ideas to a judge of panels. Shils also partnered with the Hispanic Dental Association to host a second dental student competition at the end of the year. In addition, the Shils Fund continued to support education programs with a co-sponsored scholarship with the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation which was awarded to a deserving dental school student as well as supporting a program to help the oral health needs of a vulnerable population, the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program. The Shils Fund supported the Global Oral Health Initiative at the University of Michigan and the 2018 GNYDM First Public Health Discussion. The Shils Fund supported the NJ HealthHome2.0 Initiative, which is a program to help provide access to oral health care for underserved children. The Shils Fund supported the Brighterway Institute, which is a program to support the health needs of homeless veterans. The Shils Fund also supported two programs for individuals/children with disabilities to help provide access to oral health care- The Viscardi Center to support Project Accessible Oral Health (PAOH). Each Dental Student Competition winner was given a grant to help fund their innovative projects further.
