Mission

CALL/ City as Living Laboratory works with artists, scientists, and residents of urban communities to create sustainable solutions for urgent environmental issues including climate, equity and health. We help people connect environmental challenges to personal experience and take action.

About

In 2018 CALL conducted three WALKS in Milwaukee and one WALK in Chinatown (NYC). Our programs also included two workshops and one forum in Chinatown. The workshops focused on the use and cultivation of traditional Chinese medicinal and culinary herbs and the forum addressed how heat-imaging technology could be used to help advocate for improvements in low-income housing. Another forum was held in West Harlem on how the arts and design can advance community resilience and emergency preparedness. In July CALL launched a multi-faceted program to support the movement to daylight Tibbetts Brook. This project included the creation of a mobile, demonstration wetlands and a series of body painting events, Estuary Tattoos, that equated the human circulatory system with the earths to help build awareness and public engagement around daylighting. CALL and its partners in Milwaukee also commissioned new works by two local artists around water stewardship as part of WaterMarks.Other 2018 activities included the launch of a National CALL/WALKS program with six partner cities across the US (to take place in May 2019). CALL has also continued the cataloguing and digitization of Mary Misss extensive archive; once completed it will be made public through an online portal.
