To promote the health and well-being of African refugee and immigrant women and their families in the Twin Cities through research and education, organizing and community building, advocacy, and leadership development.

About

AGILE - The African Girls Initiative for Leadership & Empowerment - is an after-school program that serves over 90 girls 5 high schools and 5 community sites each year. Schools are found across the Twin Cities and the community sites include a church, a mosque, a library and an apartment building complex. The curricula include College Attendance 101, Financial Literacy for College, Environmental Awareness, Teen pregnancy prevention education using the Becoming a Responsible Teenager curriculum African Women's Employment (AWE) program. Served some 124 women this year, assisting some with job readiness and finding jobs, and sponsoring 85 to train as Certified Nursing Assistants with a certified training program. Funding for the women's tuition is provided through a grant from the Department of Employment and Economic Development. On graduation, MAWA assists the women find jobs as CNAs and PCAs with home care service providers. Women served increased by 10 over last year's numbers.
