THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF ANNAPOLIS & ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY (BGCAA) PROVIDES ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, QUALITY, AFTER SCHOOL AND OUT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH FROM THE AGES OF 6 TO 18. BGCAAS FIVE CLUBHOUSES (WITH A SIXTH SLATED TO OPEN FALL 2018) SERVE YOUTH DURING THE CRITICAL HOURS WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT - AFTER SCHOOL, DURING SCHOOL BREAKS AND DURING THE SUMMER. POWER HOUR RUNS FROM MONDAY TO THURSDAY, DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, FOR ONE HOUR.? WHEN CLUBS IMPLEMENT POWER HOUR, YOUTH EXTEND THEIR LEARNING BEYOND THE SCHOOL DAY WITH: ACADEMIC SUPPORT INCLUDING HOMEWORK HELP?ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT INCLUDING FUN/INTERACTIVE HIGH-YIELD LEARNING ACTIVITIES TUTORING FOR THOSE WHO NEED MORE INTENSIVE HELP POWER HOUR HELPS DRIVE POSITIVE OUTCOMES FOR YOUTH BY OFFERING STRUCTURED TIME AND PLACE FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO HELP MEMBERS COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK. IT ENABLES CLUB MEMBERS TO START EACH SCHOOL DAY BETTER PREPARED, WITH A SENSE OF CONFIDENCE AND COMPETENCE. THE PROGRAM IS LEAD BY THE CLUB DIRECTOR AT EACH OF THE CLUBHOUSES, WITH ASSISTANCE FROM PROGRAM DIRECTORS, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS, JUNIOR STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS. JUNIOR STAFFTHE JUNIOR STAFF PROGRAM ASSISTS CLUB MEMBERS FROM THE AGES OF 16 TO SENIOR YEAR IN COLLEGE WITH EXPLORATION OF A CAREER IN YOUTH OR HUMAN SERVICES, PARTICULARLY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB WORK. YOUNG PEOPLE PREPARE FOR FUTURE ROLES AS HUMAN SERVICES PROFESSIONALS BY PARTICIPATING IN CAREER DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES, DISCOVERING THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY SERVICES, BUILDING CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS AND COMPLETING A CLUB APPRENTICESHIP. JUNIOR STAFF ARE HIRED AS PART-TIME EMPLOYEES, OFFERING SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT TO THE STAFF AT EACH CLUBHOUSE.CAREER LAUNCHCAREER LAUNCH IS A CAREER EXPLORATION AND MENTORING PROGRAM FOR TEENS AGES 13-18. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES THE CAREER LAUNCH WEBSITE THAT ALLOWS TEENS TO TAKE AN INTEREST SURVEY, EXPLORE CAREERS, IDENTIFY TRAINING OR COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS, SEEK OUT FINANCIAL AID AND PLAY SKILLS-BUILDING GAMES. THERES ALSO AN EASY-TO-USE CAREER EXPLORATION QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE WITH A BROAD RANGE OF CAREER PLANNING AND JOB SKILLS ACTIVITIES THAT CLUB STAFF OR VOLUNTEERS CAN USE WITH TEENS. ROOTED IN READING ROOTED IN READING ENCOURAGES BGCAAS YOUNGEST CLUB MEMBERS (AGES 6-8 YEARS) TO ENGAGE WITH BOOKS THROUGH LISTENING TO STORIES AND EXPANDING THEIR CREATIVITY THROUGH BOOK-RELATED ACTIVITIES. PROGRAMMING TAKES PLACE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, ONCE A WEEK, IN EACH OF THE BGCAA CLUBHOUSES. CLUB STAFF READ A SELECTION OF BOOKS PICKED BY OUR DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION EACH WEEK READING THE BOOK ALOUD, DISCUSSING KEY IDEAS AND ENGAGING CLUB MEMBERS WITH QUESTIONS THAT HELP THEM DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. THROUGH ROOTED IN READING, OUR STAFF ENCOURAGE CLUB MEMBERS TO POPCORN READ IN FRONT OF THE GROUP, WHERE EACH CHILD GETS TO READ A PAGE BEFORE CHOOSING WHO WILL READ THE NEXT PAGE. THIS INSTILLS CONFIDENCE TOWARD READING ALOUD. AFTER READING THE BOOK CLUB MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN FUN AND ENGAGING SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES THAT REINFORCE THE STORY AS WELL AS ENGAGES THEM IN EXTENDED LEARNING.TRIPLE PLAYTRIPLE PLAY IS A GAME PLAN FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL. THIS IS A DYNAMIC WELLNESS PROGRAM THAT DEMONSTRATES HOW EATING RIGHT, KEEPING FIT AND FORMING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS ADD UP TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.THE GOAL OF THE TRIPLE PLAY PROGRAM IS TO IMPROVE CLUB MEMBERS KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTHY HABITS; INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HOURS CLUB MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND STRENGTHEN THEIR ABILITY TO INTERACT POSITIVELY WITH OTHERS WHILE ENGAGING IN POSITVE RELATIONSHIPS.
