Mission

Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust (PTLT) preserves rural lands for current and future generations through conservation easements and environmental stewardship. In 2019 we added easements on 190.4 acres of land bringing our protected total to 36 parcels and 5500 acres. (See Schedule O)

About

Easement Acquisition: We continued to acquire new easements to protect property in Southern Maryland in perpetuity. Two new easements were settled in 2019 protecting 190.4 additional acres of land. One of these easements was funded under grants from Maryland's Rural Legacy Program and the other was acquired through a unique partnership between Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust, Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust (CPNHT), Maryland Environmental Trust and the U. S. Navy. Sixty-seven acres of pristine Calvert County watershed have been preserved for future generations to enjoy. The July 18 transaction involved the purchase of an easement on land along upper reaches of Hellen Creek from The Nature Conservancy, which in turn donated the land to CPNHT. Monies for the easement came from the U.S. Navy's Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration program. This brings the total properties under easement to 36 comprising over 5,500-acres. We have 4 more properties that are anticipated to receive conservation easements in 2020. One of these is a property in Great Mills, MD being funded under the Maryland Stateside Program Open Space. Our proposal for an expansion of the Huntersville Rural Legacy area was approved by the state adding almost 6000 additional acres and 158 new parcels available for protection. We are currently working with many of these and other landowners who have expressed interest in the Rural Legacy Program or an easement donation.
