About

While the core of Jacob's Ladder, Inc. programs is an annual summer enrichment program, held this year at Christ Church Episcopal School in Middlesex County, there are other parts of the enrichment program which are held throughout the year. This year the program included 55 climbers, 15 Resident Assistants, 4 Board Members or Directors and 17 teachers. There are other field trips during the year as part of follow up activities to make sure the Climbers are staying on track. The cost per climber for 2019 was $4225 and anticipated to be $4277 in 2020.Jacobs Ladder, Inc. added in 2018 and again in 2019 a High School Advocate to follow the progress of Climbers making their way through high school and navigating the next step beyond graduation.Resident advisors serve as mentors, contract teachers are hired for the education programs and senior staff combine with these groups to assist with the role of life coaches. In addition to the summer programs, Jacob's Ladder staff serve to follow up on student progress through one on one and group meetings. This year, summer staffers were paid as W2 employees and instructors were paid as contractors, given the short span of time they are performing services for Jacob's Ladder Climbers.Group meetings may be combined with a field trip or travel to cultural events. These group meetings plus one on one follow up help the climbers to stay on track with their goals and to engage with staff, alumnae, peers and prospective Climbers.A new van was purchased in 2019 with funds provided for that purpose.Jacob's Ladder, Inc. hired an Executive Director in 2019 upon the fall departure of Susan Albaugh and JL welcomed Dr David Neibuhr as Executive Director. The offices of Jacob's Ladder, Inc. relocated to a rented office space in Urbanna, Virginia in 2018. As a result some additional office expense was incurred related to this move in 2018 and increased costs reflect a full year in 2019.Mrs. Castrodale was hired to serve as High School Advocate for the program, which is a new position.$38,800 of grant money was deferred to be expensed in 2019. Unrealized losses on the portfolio were recovered within two months of year end in 2019, so those losses were temporary in nature. However, the investments are still exposed to potential market drops after year end close.
