MATTHEWS HELP CENTER (MHC) HELPS OUR NEIGHBORS SURVIVE FINANCIAL CRISISBY PROVIDING SHORT-TERM ASSISTANCE THROUGH BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO SUPPORT FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS. OUR PRIMARY CLIENTS ARE THOSE WHOSE FINANCIAL RESOURCES ARE STRAINED TO THE BREAKING POINT BY UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO CLIENTS INCLUDES FOOD, CLOTHING, AND SHORT-TERM FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR LIFE ESSENTIALS SUCH AS SHELTER, UTILITIES, GAS, TRANSPORTATION, AND CHILDCARE. BY RAISING OUR OWN FINANCIAL RESOURCES FROM DONATIONS, GRANTS AND THRIFT-STORE REVENUE EACH YEAR (NO GOVERNMENT FUNDS), MHC HAS THE FLEXIBILITY TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE WHERE AND HOW IT IS MOST NEEDED IN OUR COMMUNIUTY.MHC'S PRIMARY PROGRAM PROVIDES SHORT-TERM FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR EXPENSES RELATED TO HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION. HOWEVER, MHC SUPPORTS SEVERAL OTHER COMPLEMENTARY PROGRAMS. AT OUR FOOD PANTRY, CLIENTS RECEIVE THE FOOD ITEMS NEEDED TO FEED THEIR HOUSEHOLD FOR 1 WEEK. MHC'S BOUNCEBACK BACKPACK PROGRAM PROVIDES 80 SCHOOLCHILDREN A BACKPACK FULL OF HEALTHY, NONPERISHABLE FOOD EVERY WEEKEND THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. MHC OPERATES THE BACKPORCH TREASURES THRIFT BOUTIQUE TO OFFER ARTICLES OF EVERYDAY LIVING AT NO COST TO CLIENTS AND AT AFFORDABLE PRICES FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC. MHC ALSO SUPPORTS SEASONAL PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE BACK 2 SCHOOL PROGRAM (PROVIDING GRADEAPPROPRIATE SCHOOL SUPPLIES), THE THANKSGIVING FEAST PROGRAM, AND THE HOLIDAY SUPPORT PROGRAM. IN FISCAL YEAR 2018/2019 WE PROVIDED 8,406 FINANCIAL AND IN KIND SERVICES TO 3,787 HOUSEHOLDS WHICH COMPRISED 7,379 INDIVIDUALS FOR A TOTAL OF $772,223 IN FINANCIAL/NON-FINANCIAL ASSITANCE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
