About

PUBLIC TRUST: DEFENSE OF PLACE HUEY JOHNSON'S 1997 FOUNDING OF DEFENSE OF PLACE SERVED AS A CLARION CALL TO FIGHT FOR PUBLIC LANDS WHOSE PROTECTIVE DEEDS AND STATUTES ARE NULLIFIED FOR THE PURPOSES OF DEVELOPMENT OR NATURAL RESOURCE EXPLOITATION. AS NEFARIOUS ATTEMPTS ESCALATE TO UNRAVEL THE LAWS THAT SHIELD LANDS HELD IN THE PUBLIC TRUST, DEFENSE OF PLACE COMMENDS THE OPPOSITION BY EXTRAORDINARY ORGANIZATIONS AND PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO SURRENDER THEIR PUBLIC LANDS. WE CONTINUE TO BE HONORED TO OFFER COMMUNICATIONS AND STRATEGIC ASSISTANCE TO THE GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGNS WORKING TIRELESSLY -- OFTEN FOR YEARS -- TO ENSURE THAT PRESERVATION PROMISES ARE NOT BETRAYED.RESTORE POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE (RPRNS).RRI CONTINUES ITS ROLE AS THE CENTRAL ORGANIZATION INTEGRATING EFFORTS TO DEFEND POINT REYES AGAINST THREATS TO ITS FUTURE. RPRNS'S RECENT PUBLIC EDUCATION INITIATIVE INCLUDED PUBLIC MEETINGS, PARK TOURS, MEDIA OUTREACH, VIDEOS AND OTHER METHODS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF LOCAL RANCHERS AND POLITICIANS' INTENTION TO FURTHER ENCROACH ON POINT REYES' WILDERNESS AREAS. OUR EFFORTS RESULTED IN OVER 7,600 INDIVIDUAL COMMENTS BEING SENT TO THE PARK SERVICE DURING ITS CRITICAL PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD BEFORE THE ISSUANCE OF ITS GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN. MORE THAN 96% OF THE PUBLIC COMMENTS FAVORED PARK RESTORATION OVER PRIVATE RANCHING INTERESTS. WE CONTINUE TO PRESS THE PARK SERVICE FOR BETTER MANAGEMENT.
