About

THE 9TH ANNUAL CORE4STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS) PROGRAM - THE MISSION OF THE CORE4STEM PROGRAM IS TO INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN THE STEM FIELDS. IN 2018, THE 9TH ANNUAL CORE4STEM PROGRAM HOSTED OVER 5,000 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM SIX INNER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICTS: SOUTHWEST, HARLANDALE, SOUTH SAN, EDGEWOOD, JUDSON, AND SAN ANTONIO ISD. THIS EVENT CONSISTS OF A FAMILY DAY FOCUSED AROUND SIX PARTICIPATING LOCAL COLLEGE INSTITUTIONS FOR BOTH PARENTS AND STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE A COLLEGE CAMPUS, PARTICIPATE IN SOME OF THE HANDS ON BREAKOUT SESSIONS THAT WILL OCCUR DURING THE NORMAL EVENT DAYS, AND OBTAIN INFO AND RESOURCES ON FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS WHEN APPLYING TO COLLEGE. DURING THE TWO MAIN EVENT DAYS, SEPARATED BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS ON EITHER DAY, COMMUNITY STEM LEADERS WITHIN THEIR FIELD FROM VARIOUS CORPORATIONS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES WILL PRESENT AND PROVIDE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES AMONGST THE 53 HANDS-ON BREAKOUT SESSION. BOTH THE SAN ANTONIO HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE HISPANIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION HAVE INVESTED VALUABLE RESOURCES TO CONTINUE A SUCCESSFUL STEM INITIATIVE. THIS YEAR-LONG PROGRAM FOCUSES ON THE DUAL GOALS OF DECREASING THE TIDE OF HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL DROPOUT RATES, WHILE INCREASING EFFORTS TO EXPOSE HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COLLEGE AND TECHNICAL CAREER TRAINING PROGRAMS AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHTING HIGH-PAYING STEM CAREERS AND THE LOCAL PATHWAYS TO PURSUE THOSE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.
