Mission
GeoHazards International (GHI) works to end preventable death and suffering from natural disasters. We help the world's most vulnerable communities prepare for risks such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, extreme weather events, and the impacts of climate change. Our solutions emphasize pre-disaster mitigation, preparedness, and building local capacity to manage risk. We partner with local engineers, scientists, government agencies, universities, and building trades. Much of our work targets school and hospital readiness. We also educate people how to safeguard their families and neighborhoods. In each case we work toward locally appropriate and lasting solutions.

REDUCING EARTHQUAKE RISK IN FAR WEST AND MID-WEST NEPAL: A POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE FAULT IS POISED TO RUPTURE BENEATH THE RUGGED, HILLY REGION OF FAR WEST AND MID-WEST NEPAL. IT COULD BE FIVE TIMES MORE POWERFUL THAN THE 2015 EARTHQUAKE THAT OCCURRED NEAR KATHMANDU. WE'RE FOCUSING ON 14 VULNERABLE DISTRICTS. MOST OF THE TYPICAL SCHOOLS, HOMES, AND HOSPITALS ARE NOT CURRENTLY DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND INTENSE SHAKING.WE CREATED SCENARIOS FOR THREE DISTRICTS, AND THEIR HEADQUARTER MUNICIPALITIES. A STORYLINE FOLLOWS LOCAL CHARACTERS AND INCLUDES PRACTICAL LESSONS TO PREPARE. APPENDICES CONTAIN DETAILED TECHNICAL FINDINGS THAT WILL BE OF INTEREST TO LOCAL SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND OFFICIALS. THEN WE BROUGHT TOGETHER LOCAL LEADERS AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS AGAIN TO DEVELOP ACTION PLANS THAT WOULD REDUCE THE CONSEQUENCES. THEY LEARNED WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AND WHY. THEY TOOK OWNERSHIP OF TASKS. AND TO ENSURE THAT LOCAL PROFESSIONALS CAN SUSTAIN IMPORTANT REFORMS, WE TRAINED ENGINEERS AND MASONS IN SKILLS THEY NEED TO MAKE SAFER BUILDINGS AND ROADS. GHI IS PROVIDING MUCH NEEDED TECHNICAL GUIDANCE AND ACTIONABLE INFORMATION AT A CRITICAL TIME. UNDER NEPAL'S NEW CONSTITUTION AND FEDERAL SYSTEM, LOCAL JURISDICTIONS HAVE NEW RESPONSIBILITY TO MANAGE SAFE GROWTH AND DISASTER RESPONSE.
