The mission of the university is to develop in its students capacities for critical analysis, aesthetic appreciation, sound judgment, and apt expression that will sustain a lifetime of intellectual curiosity, active inquiry, and reasoned independence. The only national independent undergraduate liberal arts college in Western Washington, Puget Sound serves 2,600 students from 46 states and abroad, providing 1,200 classes in more than 50 major areas of study in the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences, including graduate programs in education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The college maintains a low student-faculty ratio and places an emphasis on excellence in teaching. Faculty awards include seven Washington state professors of the year from the Carnegie Foundation.
