About this organization
Mission
Dogs for Better Lives (formerly Dogs for the Deaf) is a national award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit organization rescuing, professionally training, and providing Assistance Dogs since 1977. We currently have three Assistance Dog programs, including: Hearing (national), Facility (national), and Autism (Oregon, Washington, and California). Donations assist the organization in numerous ways, including: rescuing dogs all across the western United States, veterinarian expenses once the dogs are here at DBL, professional training, placement with clients across the country, and follow-ups during the lifetime of this dog and its placement with the client.
About
DBL TRAINERS TRAVEL TO ANIMAL SHELTERS ACROSS THE WESTERN U.S. TO EVALUATE DOGS FOR APPROPRIATE TEMPERAMENT, CONFIDENCE, AND WORK ETHIC. DOGS MEETING THE CRITERIA ARE BROUGHT TO DBL'S SOUTHERN OREGON CAMPUS FOR FURTHER EVALUATION AND NECESSARY MEDICAL TREATMENT. THEY THEN BEGIN EXTENSIVE TRAINING, WHICH CAN TAKE UP TO 4-6 MONTHS OR LONGER FOR EACH DOG. THE DOG IS THEN CAREFULLY MATCHED WITH AN APPLICANT FROM A WAITING LIST, AND THE TRAINER TAKES THE DOG TO THE PERSON'S HOME TO TEACH THE CLIENT HOW TO MAINTAIN THE DOG'S TRAINING. AFTER PLACEMENT, DBL PERFORMS CONTINUAL FOLLOW UP WITH ALL OF ITS TEAMS, PROVIDING GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FOR THE LIFE OF THE TEAM. DBL NO LONGER REQUIRES A $50 APPLICATION FEE OR $500 GOOD FAITH DEPOSIT, THEREFORE PROVIDING ITS DOGS AT NO COST TO THEIR CLIENTS. IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2018-2019, DBL MAINTAINED REGULAR CONTACT WITH AND PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR 147 EXISTING CLIENTS. DBL RESCUED 34 DOGS FROM SHELTERS, 16 DBL BRED PUPPIES, AND ACQUIRED 10 DOGS THROUGH NETWORKING WITH OTHER SERVICE DOG AGENCIES. THE ORGANIZATION PLACED A TOTAL OF 61 DOGS: 19 HEARING DOGS, 3 AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOGS, 1 FACILITY DOG, AND 38 CAREER CHANGE DOGS. THE AUTISM AND FACILITY DOG PROGRAMS ARE DBL'S NEWEST ENDEAVORS AND ARE EXPECTED TO GROW SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS.
