About

DURING 2018, OCEAN VOYAGES INSTITUTE CONTINUED FOCUSING OUR WORK IN THE AREAS OF PRESERVATION OF THE OCEAN ENVIRONMENT AND THE MARITIME ARTS AND SCIENCES AND ISLAND CULTURES. IN ADDITION TO OUR VARIOUS ENDEAVORS, EDUCATION OF YOUTH AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY OCEANS REMAINS PARAMOUNT TO US. OUR OCEAN CLEAN UP INITIATIVE PROJECT KAISEI HAS BEEN WORKING SPECIFICALLY ON THE AREA OF ADVOCATING AND ACCOMPLISHING OCEAN CLEAN UP. WE FOCUS ATTENTION AND CREATE SOLUTIONS REGARDING THE URGENT ISSUE OF PLASTIC DEBRIS/GARBAGE IN THE GLOBAL OCEAN. THE INSTITUTE EDUCATES THOUGH LECTURES, FILM, ATTENDING & PARTICIPATING IN VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCEAN CONFERENCES/EVENTS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND COLLABORATION WITH VARIOUS OTHER NON-PROFITS AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. WE WORK WITH A NETWORK OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. AND INTERNATIONALLY. WE OFFER INFORMATION AND COLLABORATION WITH LIKE MINDED ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS.IN MAY & JUNE OF 2019 WE PLANNED AND EXECUTED A CLEANUP IN THE PACIFIC GYRE. DURING 2018 WE DESIGNED AND HAD MANUFACTURED GPS SATELLITE TRACKERS WHICH WE DISTRIBUTED TO YACHTS SAILING THROUGH THE NORTH PACIFIC SUB-TROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/GARBAGE GYRE FOR THEM TO USE TAGGING GHOSTNETS. THIS ALLOWS US TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DEBRIS DISTRIBUTION. IT ALSO WILL ALLOW US EFFICIENT CLEANUP OF THESE TAGGED MATERIALS AND LEAD US TO AREAS OF GREATEST ACCUMULATION OF PLASTIC DEBRIS IN THE OCEAN. OUR EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED BOTH ON STOPPING THE FLOW OF DISPOSABLE PLASTICS INTO THE OCEAN AND IN THE AREA OF CONDUCTING CLEAN UPS, BOTH IN PARKS, RIVERS, BEACHES, AND AT SEA. WE FEEL WE NEED TO CHANGE OF AMOUNT OF DISPOSABLE PLASTICS THAT ARE UTILIZED IN OUR WORLD AND ULTIMATELY END UP IN OUR OCEAN. WE NEED TO INNOVATE WAYS OF USING PLASTIC AS A MATERIAL THAT IS UTILIZED FOR THINGS WE KEEP AND DO NOT DISPOSE OF SUCH AS RAILROAD TIES, CONSTRUCTION, INSULATION BOARDS, ETC. AND STOP THE PROLIFERATION OF THROW AWAY PLASTIC KNIVES, FORKS, PLATES, CUPS, BAGS, ETC.OUR OCEAN IS BECOMING CLOGGED WITH OUR GARBAGE, MOST SPECIFICALLY PLASTIC GARBAGE/DEBRIS. AT THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON OCEANS IN JUNE OF 2017, THE PLASTIC DEBRIS IN OUR OCEAN WAS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS FACING US TODAY. THE HEALTH OF OUR OCEANS ARE DETERIORATING AND OCEAN CREATURES RANGING FROM FISH TO SEA TURTLES TO PORPOISES TO WHALES ARE BEING KILLED BY OUR PLASTIC GARBAGE. WE ARE CURRENTLY FOCUSING PARTICULARLY ON THE AREA OF GHOST NETS AND ARE WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH TEAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AND ELSEWHERE. IN ADDITION TO OUR THINK TANK REGARDING THE MOST EFFICIENT METHODS OF OCEAN CLEAN UP, WE ARE ALSO DISTRIBUTING SATELLITE TAGS WHICH CAN BE PLACED ON GHOST NETS (DERELICT FISHING GEAR) AND WHICH ALLOWS US TO TRACK THESE AND WILL HELP US TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION OF DEBRIS IN OUR OCEAN AS WELL AS ALLOW US TO DO EFFICIENT CLEAN UP ON A LARGER SCALE WITH TUGS, BARGES, SUPPLY SHIPS, ETC. TO REMOVE THE TOXIC PLASTICS FROM OUR OCEAN.WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH OUR FILM FOOTAGE AND PROJECTS ON OUR DOCUMENTARY FILM PROJECTS AND FILM CLIPS USED FOR LECTURES AND GENERAL EDUCATION. WE GIVE PRESENTATIONS RANGING FROM GROUPS SUCH AS THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN GEOGRAPHERS TO SCHOOL GROUPS AT ALL LEVELS TO YACHT CLUBS AND A RANGE OF OCEAN EVENTS. WE WORK WITH AND COLLABORATE WITH EXPERTS AROUND THE WORLD TO ADVOCATE THE MOST EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE CLEAN UP METHODS AND TECHNOLOGY FOR AT SEA CLEAN UP. WE ALSO CONTINUE LOCAL WORK ON PRESERVING THE MARITIME HISTORY OF SAUSALITO, CALIFORNIA, WHERE WE ARE BASED.
