About

St. Johns Food Share has been in the forefront of community efforts to fight hunger in North Portland since our inception in 1988. Beginning as a backyard gleaning organization, we are now a vibrant partnership with area grocers and wholesalers, regularly collecting donations of fresh produce, dairy, baked goods, as well as canned and shelf stable items, to help fight food insecurity among member families. We engage 125 member families and 175 volunteers to serve over 1,000 individuals each year through distribution of over 300,000 pounds of food to families in St Johns, North and Northwest Portland, and across Metro Portland. Our sustainable, eco-friendly practices offer food security to hundreds of people each month. We collaborate with the Oregon Food Bank and local food pantries, homeless shelters, and subsidized housing units. We keep healthy donated food out of the waste stream, and get it to the kitchens of vulnerable members of the community. We have proudly served 22,000 local families over the past 30 years. To support our growing organization, we have a long-term lease on our handicapped-accessible building, located on public transportation, in the heart of St. Johns, a part of North Portland recognized by the Oregon Food Bank as a food insecure community. SJFS members, who include many elderly, immigrants, refugees, and people in poverty, are active participants in our food sharing co-operative. Each member family contributes to our organization by volunteering several hours per month, and paying a fixed monthly membership fee. We are motivated to serve families and grow our impact through increased community outreach and FoodSmart, our nutritional education programs.
