THE 70TH OJAI MUSIC FESTIVAL, LED BY ACCLAIMED THEATRE AND OPERA DIRECTOR PETER SELLARS, TOOK PLACE FROM JUNE 9 THROUGH 12, 2016. SELLARS' VISION-A CELEBRATION OF THE DIVERSE VOICES OF WOMEN AS ARTISTS, ACTIVISTS, PIONEERS AND VISIONARIES-WAS POWERFULLY REALIZED IN 16 PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR DAYS. AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE FOR THE FESTIVAL, ALL BUT TWO OF THE PROFESSIONAL COMPOSERS WHOSE WORKS WERE PERFORMED WERE WOMEN. OTHER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED:*FREE FAMILY CONCERTS: THE FESTIVAL PROGRAMMED TWO FREE FAMILY CONCERTS ON SUNDAY, JUNE 12. THE FIRST AT THE OJAI ART CENTER WAS AN INTIMATE PERFORMANCE OF MUSIC FOR TOY PIANOS AND TOY INSTRUMENTS, PERFORMED BY PHYLLIS CHEN AND MEMBERS OF THE ICE WITH MORE THAN 250 AUDIENCE MEMBERS. THAT SAME AFTERNOON, NEARLY 1,500 CHILDREN AND ADULTS PACKED LIBBEY BOWL FOR AN EXUBERANT FREE CONCERT THAT FEATURED THE YOUTH ORCHESTRA OF LOS ANGELES AND ICE PERFORMING SEVEN WORLD PREMIERES.* SANTA PAULA: THE CULMINATING EVENT OF THE 2016 FESTIVAL WAS A "FREE STREET PARTY JAM" IN SANTA PAULA, A MUSICALLY ECLECTIC STREET FESTIVAL HELD ON THEIR MAIN STREET. ATTENDED BY A VERY DIVERSE GROUP OF NEARLY 1,000 PEOPLE FROM SANTA PAULA, OJAI, AND LOS ANGELES, THE PROGRAM WAS A MULTI-CULTURAL CELEBRATION OF MUSICAL TRADITIONS FROM INDIA, EGYPT, LATIN AMERICA, AND THE UNITED STATES. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME IN ITS 70-YEAR HISTORY THAT A FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE WAS HELD OUTSIDE THE CITY OF OJAI. THE PROJECT WAS COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE OJAI MUSIC FESTIVAL, THE CITY OF SANTA PAULA, THE SANTA PAULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, AND LIMONEIRA. * REMOTE PARTICIPATION: LIVE VIEWING OF THE 2016 FESTIVAL CONCERTS FROM LIBBEY BOWL VIA THE INTERNET INCREASED BY 180% OVER THE PRIOR YEAR, FROM 4,462 VIEWS TO MORE THAN 13,000. IN THE MONTHS SINCE THE FESTIVAL ENDED, THERE HAVE BEEN ANOTHER 13,523 VIEWS OF THE RECORDED CONCERTS AND TALKS.BRAVO IS THE FESTIVALS' MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY. BRAVO PROGRAMS PROVIDE A VARIETY OF MUSICAL EXPERIENCES TO PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE OJAI VALLEY AND GREATER VENTURA COUNTY AREA, DELIVERED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS AND TRAINED VOLUNTEERS. THIS PAST YEAR, BRAVO WORKED IN SEVEN ELEMENTARY PUBLIC SCHOOLS THROUGH A VARIETY OF IN-DEPTH AND SEQUENTIAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES THAT DEVELOP THEIR MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS; WORKED WITH FOUR ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS.
