Mission

Improving quality of life for all impacted by aphasia by overcoming communication barriers at home and in our communities.

About

In 2018 the Aphasia Center directly served 196 individuals impacted by aphasia and offered 1,087 programming hours in both skilled life participation and social groups. Innovative aphasia care measures what ultimately matters most after acquiring aphasia - a person's evaluation of their own quality of life. The life participation approach to aphasia utilized by the Aphasia Center focuses on adaptive ways to communicate as well as changes in everyday environments - essential factors to successfully navigate life with aphasia. The impact of our services as self-reported by our clients after 6.5 months involvement at the center, measuring quality of life, is 1.25 (1 lowest) before aphasia center interventions and 4.5 (5 highest) after. In 2018, we saw the following life participation goals reached by those receiving our services. 1) Increased adaptive communication strategies (from 4 to 10). 2) Increased changes to environments the person with aphasia is trying to navigate. 3) Increased life participation at the Aphasia Center and in the community according to individual personal goals.
