Mary Johnson Children's Center administered a wide range of programs including: Mary Johnson Children's Center-Early Childhood Program, Middlebury Cooperative Nursery School, Orwell Early Education Program, Bristol, Middlebury, Monkton, New Haven, Salisbury, Starksboro, and Weybridge after school programs, Vergennes, Middlebury and Bristol summer programs, referral and subsidy services. Stars accreditation support services for the state of VT. Established a new infant program in the Barrera House with grant support from VB5. This included remodeling of the interior, new bathroom, sinks and other construction that was necessary. A portion of the Barrera House was reroofed. Established a new school age program at the Salisbury Elementary School. Made improvements to the Barrera House, including siding and insulation on the north side of the building. Hired seven new staff members. 63 Addison County children were enrolled in a high quality, nationally accredited early childhood program. 15 children received therapeutic childcare services for diagnosed mental health conditions. Each child's progress was tracked by pre and post assessments, resulting in 182 written assessments annually. In the early childhood program, 94 children received a warm breakfast, 63 children received a hot lunch and 94 received a nutritional snack for a grand total of 60,240 individual meals or snacks. 295 children were served in the center's after school and summer recreation programs. Breakfast, lunch and snacks were provided to all school age participants in the summer programs and snacks were provided to all participants in the school age programs. 15 children and their families received Head Start services. The center continued its work on establishing an early childhood program in Vergennes. Center staff attended the following meetings on a regular basis: Local Interagency Team Addison County Building Bright Futures Council, Addison County Directors Group, Stars Oversight Committee Town of Middlebury Planning Commission Vermont Community Loan Fund Business Development Committee, Building Bright Futures Early Learning and Development Committee. The referral specialist worked with over 156 families who were searching for childcare in Addison County. The Addison County Financial Assistance Program Specialist had a steady caseload of about 270 families receiving tuition assistance through the state of Vermont. The Step Ahead Recognition System continued to grow with new programs around the state participating in the Stars program. Two new Stars assessors were hired to do assessments in programs around the state. Fifth successful summer in the Middlebury Nourishes program that provided over 11,000 free lunches to children aged 2-18 in Middlebury during the summer of 2018. Fifth year of the RFD program, a summer outreach and meals program to three trailer parks in Starksboro for 8 weeks.
