About this organization
Mission
Pro Bono Partnership provides business and transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations serving the disadvantaged or enhancing the quality of life in neighborhoods in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Substantially leveraging the impact of our in-house legal staff, the Partnership annually recruits and mobilizes hundreds of attorneys from major corporations and law firms to donate their time and expertise on behalf of its nonprofit clients, enhancing their ability to improve conditions in their communities. Our goal is to provide the highest quality business legal advice to any qualifying nonprofit organization when they need it to prevent nonprofit organizations sacrificing critical program resources.
About
See schedule O. During fiscal year 2018, Pro Bono Partnership provided a broad range of legal assistance to nonprofit organizations in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This helped them understand state and federal laws and the regulations by which they are governed. We also assisted them with legal matters related to incorporation and tax exemption, establishment of governance and management policies, and specific business needs. These needs gave rise to questions related to compliance, contracts, real estate, employment, privacy issues, environmental issues, fundraising regulations, intellectual property, lobbying, campaign activity, mergers and other formal collaborations, and dissolution. In 2018, the partnership provided assistance to numerous agencies providing services related to mental health, education, the arts, hunger, housing and homelessness, children and youth, and a wide range of health and human services. Direct legal services are the hallmark of our program. Qualifying agencies are matched with volunteer attorneys who have the necessary legal expertise or, sometimes, with our staff attorneys who undertake approximately 15-20% of matters themselves. Integral to the success of those projects undertaken by volunteers is the support provided by partnership staff attorneys, who serve as co-counsel on each matter undertaken by a volunteer, screen each client and each matter to determine the nature of their legal needs and whether the partnership can assist them. In 2018, the partnership assisted 885 nonprofit agencies in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut on 1,735 non-litigation, business legal matters. Volunteer recruitment is a key part of our program. The partnership has drawn primarily on an often untapped source of volunteer legal services: the professional legal staff of major corporations, as well as business attorneys from private law firms. The Pro Bono Partnership provides opportunities for a broad range of business lawyers to use their legal skills to represent nonprofit organizations. In 2018, 1,431 partnership volunteers assisted the partnership's nonprofit clients. Legal resource helpline: Staff attorneys respond to resource calls and emails from nonprofits and attorneys requesting advice. In 2018, partnership's staff attorneys responded to 1,536 legal resource calls and emails. Workshops: In addition to providing direct legal services, the partnership's staff and volunteer attorneys provide numerous educational workshops and teleconferences for the nonprofit community each year. These workshops are designed to help managers and directors of nonprofit organizations identify pertinent legal issues, adopt best practices and avoid crisis management. In 2018, the partnership provided 40 webinars and workshops. Website: The partnership provides numerous free legal resources to nonprofits and the legal community through its website, including: an interface to apply for legal assistance, an interface through which attorneys can volunteer, contact information for the legal resource helpline, a list of current workshops and webinars, answers to frequently asked questions about legal issues, and numerous publications on legal issues of particular importance to nonprofit clients. In addition, the partnership sends periodic legal alerts and information of interest to nonprofits by email, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. From the period of January 2018 to December 2018, the partnership's website received approximately 50,000 visits.
