Mission

The New Britain Museum of American Art engages and enriches a broad public to explore and understand the unfolding story of America through its art and history. We collect, preserve, and present the finest examples of American art, fulfilling an educational role through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and programs that illuminate our nation’s diverse heritage and artistic advancements[3].

About

The acquisition, presentation, and preservation of American art are at the forefront of our mission. Around 6% of our collection is on display for the enjoyment of the general public. Other objects are available to scholars for study or for loan to other museums and select corporations, organizations and public agencies. The museum's collection, numbering over 8,000 works and spanning five centuries, reflects strength in colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism and the eight. Highlights of the collection include Thomas Hart Benton's mural series 'The Arts of Life in America,' Dale Chihuly's 'Blue and Beyond Blue' chandelier, and over 500 works by Sol Lewitt. A total of 10 exhibitions were on view in FY18, including: Architecture as Muse: The Grand Tour; California Dreaming: Ed Moses, Billy Al Bengston, & Ed Ruscha; Harry Everett Townsend: Illustrations of a World War I Artist; Focus on: Shaker Woodenware II; Ghana Paints Hollywood; Architecture as Muse: American Skyline; New/Now: Francisca Benitez; American Post-Impressionists: Maurice and Charles Prendergast; New/Now: Paul Baylock; Nor'Easter: 48th Annual Juried Exhibition. The annual holiday decorating was on display throughout the galleries as well as four student artwork exhibitions from New Britain, Berlin, and Plainville students plus a partnership with Talcott Mountain Science Center. A partnership with the Delamar Hotel, West Hartford featured two exhibitions at their West Hartford location: East & West Coast Cool: American Art, 1960s to Now and Wonder Stories: Pulp Art at the Delamar Hotel.
