Mission

Carroll Gardens Association's service area is located in southwest Brooklyn, including the neighborhoods of Red Hook, the Columbia Street Waterfront District, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, and Sunset Park. While we serve the entire southwest Brooklyn and portions of Brooklyn Community Board 6 and Community Board 7, our catchment area for the Neighborhood Preservation Program focuses mainly on the neighborhoods of Red Hook, the Columbia Street Waterfront District, and Carroll Gardens. As a community-based housing developer and Neighborhood Preservation Company (NPC), Carroll Gardens Association has completed over 500 affordable housing units in the neighborhoods of Red Hook, the Columbia Street Waterfront District, Carroll Gardens, and Gowanus. We are also working towards a new community development framework rooted in creating democratic workplaces, broadening ownership of capital and asset generation, equitable and inclusive growth, and environmental sustainability.

About

CGA currently maintains 150 units of affordable housing for over 350 low income residents in southwest Brooklyn. In conjunction with the Neighborhood Preservation Program, we connect tenants to existing programs and resources including computer classes, entrepreneurship workshops, and community events. Along with assisting CGA tenants, the organization has served as a resource center for over 1,000 residents annually across Brooklyn looking for housing assistance and community resources. From connecting seniors to secure home services, helping tenants navigate public assistance applications, referring residents facing eviction to legal and financial partners, CGA has a range of experience working with distressed tenants. Our one-on-one counseling is supplemented by education programs including 'Know Your Rights' and 'How to Apply for Affordable Housing' workshops. Expanding the commitment to promoting affordable housing, CGA is active in several borough and city-wide coalitions advocating for policy change and permanent affordability in our communities.
