About

Capital Youth Mentoring Program delivers in-depth individual mentoring to increase the participant's self-esteem, level of trust and motivation for positive future development and success. The program is geared for youth between the ages of 12-21. The program has averaged serving 50-60 participants per year. The Shiloh CDC Freedom School is a sponsor of the Children's Defense Fund's Freedom Schools Program. In 2018, we served 80 students from grades K-8 and provided them with fun and educational experiences. The most important of these experiences was the CDF Freedom Schools' award-winning integrated reading curriculum, daily reading lessons which are the backbone of all CDF Freedom Schools programs. Our students also participated in photography, technology, mindfulness, sports, music, and art workshops. We traveled to Harmony Hollow Run Farm every week to learn about the farm animals, the garden, and the underwater ecosystem in the farm's pond. Our students participated in the CDF Freedom Schools National Day of Social Action by participating in a mock election and registering community members to vote. We also went to the Academy of Natural Science, a Trenton Thunder baseball game, and Dorney Park. Teen Teck Center was created for the disadvantaged youth to have an introduction to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) outside of the traditional school setting. Scholars will be encouraged, through the STEAM program, to continue with advanced courses while in high school. The program provides each participant the tools to guide them to the next phase or pathway to make their career decision.
