Mission

At Van Alen Institute, we believe design can transform cities, landscapes, and regions to improve people’s lives. We collaborate with communities, scholars, policymakers, and professionals on local and global initiatives that rigorously investigate the most pressing social, cultural, and ecological challenges of tomorrow. Building on more than a century of experience, we develop cross disciplinary research, provocative public programs and inventive design competitions.

About

See schedule of competitions for 120 years we have organized inventive design competitions that shape the built environment. We see the design competition as a vehicle to mobilize people across disciplines to develop innovative approaches to complex social, cultural, and ecological challenges around the world. In 2018, we organized projects including Keeping Current, a multi-year series of competitions to address sea level rise in South Florida; the Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition; Better Bins, a competition to redesign the New York City garbage cans in collaboration with the Department of Sanitation; Urban SOS: Hour City Student Competition; and Gateways to Chinatown, a competition to imagine a public installation at the border of Chinatown and Little Italy.
