About

Founded in 1907, the school is situated on two campuses encompassing 27.5 acres in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. About 80% of the faculty hold advanced degrees. The school seeks a diverse population. In 2019, the school had an enrollment of 1,200; students of color represented 39% of that total. Financial assistance, totaling approximately $9.5 million, was awarded to nearly 20% of the student body. Students travel to the school from more than 100 zip codes; about 85% live in Manhattan or the Bronx with others coming from Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester County, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The school fosters the following community values: 1. Student life: Riverdale's department of student life -- led by Christina Young, MSEd, LC at the Middle and Upper Schools and by Jessica Delgado at the Lower School -- supports our students' character development and serves as a guiding influence as they make meaning and discover purpose in their own lives. Character education strengthens core values that support the ethical, intellectual, and social-emotional development of all learners. Continued growth and personal development are foundations that will allow our students to thrive and sustain high levels of achievement over time. We engage our students in activities and discussions designed to strengthen their self- and social awareness, ethical decision-making, problem-solving, and overall wellbeing through academic and co-curricular experiences. The student life program provides both formal and informal classroom support and parent education for the following areas of development: - Identity and Belonging - Social and Emotional Learning - Health and Wellness - Learning How To Learn 2. Engagement with local and global communities: Riverdale benefits from collaborations with other civic, educational, and cultural organizations in New York, across the nation, and around the globe. The school strives to be a learning hub whereby our faculty and students engage in learning with local and global communities. During the 2018-2019 school year, Riverdale students participated in numerous global and domestic travel opportunities. Over spring break, Middle Schoolers took part in Spanish exchange, while Upper Schoolers traveled to South Africa & Namibia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Rome, Italy; and Bears Ears National Monument in Utah as part of an outdoor expedition. In June, students participated in additional educational travel experiences, including a two-week astrophysics exploration of the Colorado Rockies; a three-week combined ecology and outdoor leadership expedition to the Alaskan Arctic; a two-week visit to Ecuador and the Galapagos; and a two-week cultural and linguistic immersion into Western China and the Silk Road. Through the school's Zagat Global Fellows Program, educators from New Zealand, South Africa, China, England, and Bangladesh have come to the campus to learn about the school's programs and pedagogy, and Riverdale faculty have made reciprocal trips. In addition, through Riverdale's education consultancy group, Plussed+, Riverdale is advising a new school in Hanoi, Vietnam, and developing an international education platform that promotes character-education research and practice in Shenzhen, China. 3. Service learning: Riverdale students volunteer regularly with Bronx community groups, such as the Riverdale Neighborhood House and Part Of The Solution. The school also plans and hosts annual events for Best Buddies, LSA Family Health Services, and City Meals on Wheels. In addition, the school makes yearly service trips to Alabama, Detroit, and New Orleans, and has ongoing relationships with groups such as the Harriet Tubman Charter School and Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. Riverdale's partnerships include formal relationships with national and international educational organizations that are aligned with the school's character-based education mission as well as groups that offer professional-development opportunities for teachers around the world. In order to share this work more effectively and develop a venture-based way to incubate and share ideas more broadly at scale, Riverdale has developed a learning-design studio known as Plussed+. This consultancy works with educators nationally and globally to share educational ideas and help other schools develop the capacity to discover and shape their efforts to innovate and improve the learning of all students.
