Mission

La MaMa is dedicated to the artist and all aspects of the theatre. Since its founding in 1961 by the legendary Ellen Stewart (1919-2011), La MaMa has served as a creative home and incubator of experimental performance for artists of all identities. La MaMa is the only original Off-Off Broadway theatre still in operation. To date, we have presented more than 5,000 productions, supporting over 150,000 artists from 76 nations. In 2018 La MaMa was honored with the Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of its significant level of artistic achievement which has contributed to the growth of theater on a national level. La MaMa has been honored with more than 30 OBIE Awards, dozens of Drama Desk and Bessie Awards, and Villager Awards.
