About

Productions and programming in our 2018-19 season, New York City Center welcomed renowned dance companies Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theatre of Harlem to the mainstage for their annual seasons. City Center welcomed ballet superstar Natalia Osipova back to our stage for Pure Dance, an extraordinary evening of ballet and modern dance featuring special guest American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer David Hallberg. As part of our season-long effort to honor the incredible artists who have called City Center home over its 75-year history, we produced a one-of-a-kind festival, Balanchine: The City Center Years, to honor George Balanchine's immeasurable contribution to our history and that of the artform. In addition, City Center co-produced the 2019 Flamenco Festival. City Center's three rehearsal studios were rented by hundreds of dancers, choreographers and companies, many of them taking advantage of a subsidized rate of $10 per hour. Manhattan Theatre Club presented three shows on City Center's Stage I, including the New York premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies' new play, Long Lost. Stage II also housed two MTC performances including Continuity, directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin. Artists performing on all stages had access to 24/7 ticketing support via City Center's box office, the CityTix phone ticketing service and City Center's website (www.nycitycenter.org). City Center's Encores! keeps the Broadway musical, our country's greatest original art form, vibrantly alive for today's audiences with the extraordinary, genre-defining scores taking center stage. Its sibling series Encores! Off-Center was created to broaden the scope and accessibility of City Center's musical theater programming through the cutting edge shows of early off-Broadway, and by offering up to 40% of all tickets each season for just $25. City Center welcomed 63,830 audience members to seven celebrated productions under this banner, including Call Me Madam; Working: A Musical; and our gala presentation of A Chorus Line, affirming our role as the custodian of the full American musical canon. The 2018 Fall for Dance Festival ran from October 1-13 and featured 20 artists and companies from across the United States and around the globe in five unique programs. The diverse line-up spanned the breadth and scope of dance styles and traditions. Visiting artists hailed from 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Algeria, and Brazil. Access and engagement remained at the forefront of Fall for Dance. With all festival tickets priced at just $15, we welcomed 22,370 audience members for 10 performances. Ticket holders were invited to deepen their experience at free pre-show dance lessons with festival artists. Audience surveys displayed the festival's success in building young and diverse audiences for the dance field and for City Center: 38% of respondents were under the age of 35; 25% had household incomes under $50,000 a year; and 36% identified as people of color.
