Mission

The Asian American Writers’ Workshop is devoted to creating, publishing, developing, and disseminating creative work by Asian American and Asian Diasporic writers. Since our founding in 1991, we have worked to provide an alternative literary arts space at the intersection of migration, race, and social justice.

About

Reading and panel discussions: AAWW live events seek to build the audience for Asian American ideas through readings and conversations with authors, journalists, poets and critical thinkers, as well as writing workshops and youth programs. Each year, AAWW hosts approximately 200 writers at more than 50 events. We have also held Page Turner, the organization's literary festival which in 2013 featured 100 artists and attracted 2,000 audience members. Online magazines: We publish our flagship magazine of arts and ideas, The Margins seeks to interpret the creative production of the Asian American artistic cutting edge: AAWW.org. The magazine seeks to build a discourse that's anti-racist and transnational, avant-garde and community-based. We tell the stories of low-income Asian American communities via our Open City editorial initiative. An innovative model that combines citizen journalism, artist fellowships, and community engagement, Open City bestows creative nonfiction fellowships on emerging writers, who tell these otherwise invisible stories. Fellowships: We are incubating the next generation of Asian American writers through artist fellowships. Since 2010, we have re-granted more than $100,000 to emerging Asian American writers.
