About

Lantern Community Services operates under the Housing First model. We believe that permanent housing is an intervention in and of itself, meeting one of the most basic human needs, shelter. The stability that comes from having safe, affordable housing allows our clients to shift focus from day-to-day survival to achieving other measures of independence and well-being. In FY 18 we have had multiple successes including: 96% of our clients maintained stable housing, either at Lantern or moving out to independent housing. 55 clients obtained employment; The average starting wage for those starting employment was $13.29 per hour 15 participants completed the Diabetes Self-Management Program 779 people participated in Fresh Food Box; Fresh Food Box distributed over 90,000 pounds of food 639 people engaged in an Arts, Culture and Fitness activity hosted by LanternAt the core of these successes is a cross functional team operating out of each of Lanterns supportive housing sites. This team includes Case Managers, Education & Employment Specialists, Health & Wellness Coordinators, and staff focusing on Art, Culture & Fitness and Nutrition& Culinary Education initiatives. Below are FY18 highlights from three program areas. Education and EmploymentLantern continues to implement the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program. This is an evidence-based intervention designed to assist clients with mental illness enter or rejoin the workforce. It is provided by trained IPS Specialists who work with the client during and after job placement to increase levels of job satisfaction and job retention. In FY18, Lantern hired an additional IPS Specialist to expand the intervention to our young adult population. The Education and Employment department also launched the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) in FY18. This program will provide an additional opportunity for clients to obtain their High School Equivalency online. It provides flexibility for adults who may not be able to attend in-person classes. Five staff members were trained on NEDP administration and 11 clients began testing to evaluate readiness for the program. Arts, Culture and FitnessLanterns Fitness program at Amber Hall expanded with the opening of a long-awaited Fitness Center. The facility, highly visible from the entrance to the building, features state of the art equipment in a beautiful space. Clients may access the facility independently, meet with a Personal Trainer or attend a group fitness class. The Arts & Culture program launched sound space in FY18. Professional musicians facilitated a series of songwriting workshops to support the development of original pieces of music composed by Lantern residents. Simultaneously, through a community partnership with the Museum of Modern Art, visual artists residing at Lantern buildings created artwork, which surrounded the musicians during performances. The songs and artwork were designed to invite dialogue in the community through a series of public performances. Nutrition and Culinary ArtsLast year, Lantern engaged in the process of developing the Food 4 Life program curriculum, creating an original nutrition education program for very low income young adults. The Food 4 Life program combines in class food preparation and skill building with trips to local supermarkets and restaurants. In FY 2018, through an Implementation Grant, the Food 4 Life program was implemented at five buildings serving young adults. Nine Lantern buildings either created or expanded their backyard gardens in FY 18. Lantern also partnered with the Horticultural Society of New York to provide horticulture workshops which offered clients a chance to learn about plants, growing food and how to prepare food while also experiencing the therapeutic benefits of working with soil and plants.
